Fresh Wonders Nature Contest

Ranked #6,251 in Squidoo Community, #387,479 overall | Donates to National Wildlife Federation's Alaska Regional Center

Welcome to the third weekly contest and tutorial lens of the new Fresh Wonders of Ning. This week's contest will feature Animal and Nature lenses.

The Fresh Wonders Squid with the winning lens will be rewarded with the Wonder Squid Award, a Spotlight interview and a little write up on Fresh Squid blog. All Squids are welcome to create and submit a Nature lens during the week of November 2 - 8, 2009.

Animal and Nature lenses can be informational or entertaining or both. Actually the sky is the limit when it comes to this type of lens.

Pictures Are Important

One of the most important ingredients in a top notch Nature lens is good images. The old adage, "A picture tells a thousand words", certainly applies here. A lens with a photo of your cute puppy, kitten or hamster is much more appealing to the reader than to just read a description of it.

Which would you rather see?

It's best to use your own images, but if none are available you can use public domain photos or get permission from the owners to use ones that you find in a Google search. Another option that may also bring you some income is to become an associate at Zazzle or AllPosters or some other site that sells posters or images.

Louisiana Cypress Lake printThere are several modules that can be used to display images. I'll just list them here, because Ener-G with the Module Mentor Lens and FunGifts4All with an alphabetical tour of modules, have gone into great detail about these modules.

Big Picture Text Module - You can upload it directly from your hard drive.
Photo Gallery - These are good for sequence photos like the stages of a butterfly. You upload these from your hard drive.
Caption This - This is a photo with a plexo on which visitors can add funny captions. You can upload a photo from your hard drive like the big picture module.
Text Module - You must host the image on another site like Flickr or Zazzle and link to it.
The Description box of any module - You must host the image on another site and link to it.

Zazzle and All Posters are great for this, because they provide all the code for you to paste into the module.

Accurate Information

Whether you are writing about caring for your new house plant or describing a species of turtle, you must check your facts. The Internet is a good way to do this quickly, but you can also check books out of the library and do the research the old fashioned way. Either way, be sure that you put the information in your own words. Never, never copy another persons work. This is called plagiarism and it is illegal to do so. Search engines also do not rate copied work highly.

Try to liven up the dull facts with interesting tidbits. Break long paragraphs up into smaller, more easy to read ones. Insert pictures within or between paragraphs to illustrate what you are writing about.

Develop a Niche

Developing a niche is the way to excel on Squidoo. You develop an unique identity. You can have several niches. Some of mine are the Snakes of Louisiana, native plants and Louisiana food and fun.

When developing a niche, first write a broad lens which tells general information about the animal or plant. You can even list and briefly describe individual ones that you plan to write other lenses about. Then as you complete the individual lenses, add a featured lens module to the main lens and to the other individual lenses (and vice-versa). This creates backlinks and serves as a directory for your niche.

Snakes of the Southeast

This whole series of "herps" of the Southeast is the best. Besides this fabulous and well documented one on Snakes, the authors have also published ones on Frogs and Turtles.

Crediting Sources

Just like in a term paper, if you use facts from a certain book or web site, you should site the reference at the bottom of a module. Images should also be referenced with links to their owner. Putting a good reference book in an Amazon Spotlight module and writing your own recommendation is a good practice and who knows, it might result in a sale.
