Cold and Allergies
I have been studying herbal healing for a very long time now. I studied for a while under the Australian Herbal College taking Correspondent courses, I studied with close friends that are herbalist, and I have read a lot of herbal healing books. Am I an expert? No, I am not. Just as with any healing method, things change and more information surfaces every day. Do I believe in herbal remedies? Yes, I do very much.
When it comes to battling the Cold and/or Allergies there are things available to help bring a little relief, so why not get a little relief with herbs the natural way? I have finally taking a little time and wrote up some of my own remedies. Before you read on I have to add my disclaimer and also I wanted to share this you. I was selling my herbal products at an All Nations Pow-wow one time. This man walked up and with a stern voice asked, "How did you come up with these mixtures?" I looked at him and explained, "To be very honest "Spirit" came me the recipes." He half smiled and said, "Good Combinations!" Turns out this gentleman was a medicine man and to this very day, I have something in my medicine bag that he gave to me.
Does this make some kind of expert in herbal healing? NO, it just means my combinations could possibly give you a little relief with your cold or allergies.
DISCLAIMER: THESE ARE FOLK-LORE REMEDIES. I AM NOT SUGGESTING, SUBSCRIBING OR GIVING ANY KIND OF MEDICAL ADVICE. ALWAYS CONSULT WITH YOUR MEDICAL PHYSICIAN BEFORE TRYING ANY OF THESE FOLK-LORE REMEDIES AND ALWAYS CONSULT WITH YOUR PHYSICIAN IF YOU ARE TAKING ANY KIND OF PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION. WHEN YOU ARE NOT SURE OF ANY HERB YOU SHOULD ALWAYS RESEARCH IT, BECAUSE AS WITH ANYTHING, THERE COULD BE SIDE EFFECTS.

Mix all of these herbs together and store in an air tight jar. Bring to boil 1 quart of distilled water and add about 3-4 teaspoons of herbal mix to boiling water. Let it steep for about 15-30 minutes.
I drink a half of cup of tea about 4 times a day.

Peppermint: Congestion, indigestion, sore throats
Lavender: Relaxant, gas, insomnia, nervousness
Yarrow: colds, diarrhea, flu, gas, hair loss, kidneys
PLEASE NOTE: Yarrow SHOULD NOT be taken during PREGNANCY. Please research for reasons
Nettle: Blood purifier, asthma, bronchitis, inflammation. Mineral rich nutritive herb with vitamin K
Mullein: Asthma, breathing, bronchitis, colds, cough, earaches
Very Good Herbal Books
Things that help with a sore throat
Sore Throat:Make an infusion by boiling 1 quart of distilled water and pour it over 2-3 teaspoons of Sage. Let the infusion steep for 15 minutes. Pour one cup and add 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and 1 teaspoon of honey.
Use this mixture as a gargle and gargle with it a few times a day.
Slippery Elm Drops
1 cup powdered slippery elm
1/8 cup of sugar (optional)
5-8 drops of peppermint extract (you be the judge how minty you want them)
1/8 cup of water
Mix ingredients together until it is doughy or pasty. Place a piece of parchment paper on a cookie sheet and spread mixture out until it is about 1/8 of an inch thick. Allow to dry for a couple of hours and cut into one inch pieces. Then allow the droplets to completely dry (for at least a couple of days or longer)
Be sure to turn them regularly. Store in an air tight jar!
These drops use to be one of my biggest sellers along with the Cold Soother Tea.
Native American Herbals
Stuffy Nose & Congestion
Stuffy Nose and Congestion:Inhaler Oil:
Use equal amounts of the following oils: I always made extra to have on hand so I used about 1-Tablespoon of each oil and stored it in a brown bottle.
Eucalyptus
Peppermint
Lavender
Pine
Thyme
Put approximately 10-15 drops of this oil mixture into a bowl and add 1 pint of boiling water. Cover head with towel and breathe in the aroma. This also works really good if you dampen a washcloth and place some of the oil on it, and lay it in the tub when you are taking a shower. The warmth from the water helps the scent to fill the shower.

Making your own "Vicks" rub:
Mix together:
1/2-teaspoon of Peppermint oil
1/2-teaspoon of Pine oil
1/2-teaspoon of Lavender oil
2- teaspoons of Eucalyptus oil
Add 2 cups of a carrier oil such as sunflower, olive or safflower oil. Warm together and add approximately 3-4 teaspoons of bees wax heat until wax is melted. Immediately pour into small glass jars. Place lid on securely once it hardens. A good way to taste the oil mixture to make sure you have used enough bees wax is place a teaspoon into the oil and set onto a saucer and in a couple of seconds the mixture should turn into a solid around the spoon.
**Please Note: I never heat my essential oils with the carrier oils before hand except when making this salve. The oils are strong enough that the scent is not going to disappear quickly. I use this salve the same way I use Vicks Vapor Rub. It is always best when wearing to make you keep your chest cover.

- There are just so very many natural therapies which we can use to our advantage. They are also generally much safer than the drugs for sale in most pharmacies.

- Hello Eva, This is a fantastic page about natural cold treatments. I have just recovered from the worst cold/flu bug. I'm going to study these remedies and be better prepared should any of the symptoms try to come back again. I appreciate that you have taken the time to share these. I'm going to make the homemade vapor rub first thing. Peppermint holds healing properties for me because my grandmother had a plant growing outside her kitchen door when I was a child and I always find myself in a zen place when I are around it. :D Thank you, Deb
