Teaching Children About Their World

Studying nature with children can be a rewarding and educational pastime. It can help them understand science better. Nature study can help children understand their surroundings and learn to be observant.

Activities 

Some activities you can do with children while studying nature are:

-nature walks
-keeping a nature journal
-collect things such as leaves, pressed flowers, bugs, acorns, pine cones
-photography
-scavenger hunts
-keeping critters (such as worms, crickets, pill bug, butterflies) as "pets" to study
-notebooking
-lapbooking
-interactive notebooks

Nature Journals 

Nature Journals can be simple or elaborate. An art sketch book is great to start a nature journal in. The child can draw what he/she sees, identify it, give some information about the discovery and date it. Another way to do a nature journal is in notebooking style in a 3-ring binder with notebooking pages.
