Thoughts and Articles About the Environment
In the Philippines, tree planting is not a simple task. The excerpt of an article below is a good guidance for anyone who may want to start a tree-planting campaign in a tropical country. The full text of the article can be read at http://freearticles-blogspot.com/
Here is the excerpt:
First, check the coming year's weather report if there is an expected drought. If there is then better hold the seedlings in the nursery until drought is over.
Second, plant the seedlings during the rainy season. It is best from June to September. According to experience, anything you plant after September even if it appears to be raining most likely could not survive the coming summer's heat. It takes about 3 months root growth so as to ensure it has gone deep and wide enough to support the young tree with underground moisture during the rainless summer months....

A Call For Help and Lending Hand
Support Our Reforestation Project
The UPV Beta Sigma Fraternity Forest ParkProject Profile and Location
The UPV Beta Sigma Fraternity Alumni Association (UPVBSFAA) will implement a tree planting and reforestation project. This project is the Fraternity's humble contribution to arrest the detrimental effects of global warming and environmental degradation.
The project is called The UPV Beta Sigma Fraternity Forest Park and is billed by fellow brothers and friends as the most noble and ambitious project of the organization for the year 2008. As we welcome the New Year, we also want to make a lasting contribution to the community and to future generation.
The Forest Park is located within the campus of the University of the Philippines in the Visayas in Miag-ao, Iloilo. The University of the Philippines in Miag-ao is the biggest campus of the UP system. It covers 8 barangays spanning 1200 hectares of rolling hills and beaches. However, only 600 hectares of the total land area are fully utilized.
The UPV administration has reached an agreement with the UPVBSFAA to develop 3 hectares of land for reforestation. The Fraternity will be the lead organization in developing the said area into a full blown mini forest site.
The UPVBSFAA on the other hand have bigger plans for the site. The Brothers have all agreed that the organization should go beyond tree planting and reforestation. We envision the site to become a fully functional Forest Park in the future.
The Fraternity believes that this noble project will have significant impact not just for the UP and Miag-ao communities but also for the entire country.
A Call for Help and a Lending Hand
Although the UPVBSFAA has all the manpower and technical knowledge to implement the project, the organization is hard pressed for additional resources to jumpstart the project and sustain the Forest Park for long term development.
It is in this light that we are seeking your help for donations and/or contributions to make this project a stunning success. Your benevolent assistance and support, in any way convenient to you, is essential to make this dream a reality.
The project needs enough funds before, during, and after the tree planting activities.
First, the seedlings must be transported to the site. Seedlings will come from as far as Negros Occidental and Metro Manila. It is also very important to condition the seedlings first before planting to ensure a high seedlings survival rate.
Before the actual tree planting activities, the site must be prepared first. Cogon and grasses should be weeded out and holes must be created where the seedlings will be planted.
After the tree planting, the site must be maintained and a caretaker will be assigned. The surrounding areas around the seedlings should be free of grass and herbivores must be kept out in order to avoid damage to the seedlings. In the absence of rains, the seedlings should be watered regularly.
All of these important steps are essential to ensure that the seedlings will survive and grow into full blown trees.
The Fraternity can ensure proper care and monitoring of the project site but we need your assistance to partially fund the above-mentioned activities.
Your help will come a long way because the Forest Park can be enjoyed not only by you but also by your children and your great grand children.
Your assistance now can be considered a positive investment for the sake of future generations.
Your help is a contribution to posterity.
