Nautical Art

Nautical artwork includes works such as decoys, carvings, sculpture, paintings, photography, model boats and other nautical, marine or nature-related art.

Nautical art comes in many forms. The popularity of all things nautical is evident when visiting shows, festivals and shops along the coasts of the USA and other areas.

Defining nautical art is like trying to define most art, it depends on the eye of the artist and the eye of the art enthusiast.

Types of Nautical Art

Photography

Photographers love the waterfront, beaches, bays, oceans, sunrises, sunsets, boats, lighthouses, fish, marine mammals, birds and other subjects.

Paintings

Find a harbor, beach or other nautical setting and you are likely to find an artist painting their rendition of the setting. Popular subjects include boats, buildings, landscapes, wildlife, people and of course, the ever changing ocean.

Waterfowl Art

Waterfowl-related art takes many forms. Decoys are perhaps the most familiar forms of waterfowl art. More detailed forms can include carvings and other objects that depict waterfowl, shorebirds and other wildlife.

The distinction between decoy and artistic carving can be a difficult one to make and many decoy lovers consider even the most crude working decoys to be a genuine and valuable form of artwork.

Gyotaku Fish Art

The fish rubbing process known as Gyotaku began two thousand years ago in the Orient. The Gyotaku technique allows for a truly accurate image of all the details in each fish.

The basic method remains relatively simple. Artists apply paint or ink to an actual fish, then lay paper or canvas on top of it. The paper or other media is rubbed over the fish and gently peeled off to expose the likeness.

Crafts

A visit to any beach town arts and crafts festival will amaze vacationers with the spectrum of nautical art. From painted buoys to miniature lighthouses, art and craft addicts will find hundreds of types of artwork at events like this.
