Cruise Wear for Children and Nautical Kids Clothes

If you are planning a family cruise. remember that cruise wear for children doesn't have to be fancy, or expensive. You don't even have to pack a single item of nautical kids clothing if you don't want to. But, on the other hand, you can if you want. There are some really fun nautical fashions for little ones - from babies through teens.

I love seeing the little boys and girls all dressed up in their childrens formal wear at the captain's gala on a cruise. The are so cute! Some of the parents even dress their kids in nautical resort wear during the day, too. Not all of them, but some definately do. Most of the kids I see have obviously gotten at least one really cute outfit for their cruise. But I really get a kick out of the nautical kids clothes.

It surely isn't necessary to dress your little girl like a princess, in a child's formal dress, or your little boy like a miniature yacht captian for dinner, but you can if you want, and at least a few of the kids seem to really enjoy it. It's like playing dress-up, or play-acting!

What to Pack for the Kids

for your family cruise

Cruise clothes for children are much the same as for adults.

DAYTIME:
Many lines describe their daytime dress as "resort casual." For the kids, take Shorts and tops; sandals, walking shoes, and shoes for dinner; one more bathing suit than you think will be needed; A bathing suit cover up; a jacket or sweater and rain poncho in case of inclement weather; sun hat for the little ones.

Notice what's NOT on the list: Jeans. Especially in the Caribbean and Mediterannean, they are just too hot. Some traditional veteran cruisers insist that they are also inappropriate, but that's startig to relax a bit on some lines.

Bag of Tricks

You Might Want
a Bag of Tricks

When Cruising with Kids . . .

Take along a Bag of Tricks!

ONE FOR YOU and ONE FOR THEM

If your kids are little, you have probably already thought of this, but just in case ... consider cruising with a bag of tricks for you, and one for each child.
What do I mean by a bag of tricks?

YOUR bag of tricks should contain at LEAST two or three books and several toys. Include at least one old favorite and a new one of each.

THEIR bag is for them to carry their treasures in when you go as a family to spend some time on the pool deck, or other places.

Keep your bag of tricks a secret, though! This is your emergency stash, for when boredom or figgetyness looks like it's about to rear its ugly head. THEN, you can pull something appropriate out of YOUR bag of tricks for them to put into THEIRS.

You might have a different item for each day, for example. Just remember to include some small, hand-held items that do NOT talk or make any other noises, to be taken to the dining room at night.

Some ideas for your Bag of Tricks

Here's a small sampling to give you some ideas fro your bag of tricks.

Should children under the age of 10 be allowed in the main dining room on Formal Night?

Loading

No, young children can't possibly behave properly for a formal dinner lasting an hour or more. They should go to the children's area.

poddys says:

I don't think that most young children fit into a formal dining room setting. I think that the formal dining room doesn't work well when there are families with young children at all.

darciefrench says:

Hmm.. probably not my kid :)

KonaGirl says:

It really depends on how the child is raised. Unfortunately, too many of today's parents do not understand the meaning of disciplined behavior and basic manners in a formal setting as they were not taught by their own parents. This makes it bad for the well mannered children, so I must say no all the way around. As usual the bad apple ruins it for the whole basket.

Tipi says:

Children are unpredictable some times. It is disruptive to an enjoyable dinner when a child is crying. Little ones are sure fun to have around, such cuties! Good question!

Of course! Surely the parents are smart enough to have briefed them beforehand.

karmicchristian says:

Teaching good etiquette starts from young and why shouldn't they learn from young!?

Buchamar says:

Absolutely!

elyria says:

Some kids are so well behaved and well mannered, they should definitely feel welcome!

PurpleTurtle says:

I have twins that are currently 4 years old. I think that they would behave just fine. I don't think that it would be a problem putting my kids in a cruise ship dining room on Formal Night.

Rafick says:

Yes, depending on how they have been brought up from early childhood.

KimGiancaterino says:

Kids are great, as long as they know how to behave. People who don't like to dine with kids around can do a late seating, right?

shalys says:

I believe it depends on the parents who teach their children how to behave properly when out for dinner as it can be a very enjoyable experience for both the kids and parents alike.

beannie64 says:

I love to see the little ones all dressed up!

Dinner Time

Dressing for Dinner

Cruise Wear - Evenings

EVENINGS
The children may prefer to go to the children's program for the dinner hour. On the other hand, the wonderful dining experience in the main dining room can be a great family time, and you may want them enjoy this special part of the cruise experience.

Check your cruise line's dinner dress guidelines. These can vary, but IN GENERAL, for a seven night cruise there will be two formal nights, one or two smart casual nights, and three or four casual nights.

On casual and smart casual nights, little boys will be fine in a pair of slacks and a polo shirt or button shirt, while little girls can wear slacks or a skirt and blouse, or a casual dress.

On formal nights, anything from a party or sunday dress all the way up to a child's formal is appropriate for girls. For boys, at least a dress shirt and a boy's tie will do, but you will even see some boys all decked out in their little tuxedoes.

Fabulous Cruise Wear on a Budet

I have a dear friend who, like me, is a regular cruiser. She buys all of her cruise wear at high end consignment / thrifts or on eBay. When the kids go cruising, that's where she gets their things too.

My friend ALWAYS looks stupendous on formal night, in a beautiful gown that she got for pennies on the dollar. She knows, and I know. But as for the rest of our shipmates, nobody is the wiser!

Have a look at some of the cute cruise wear for girls and boys that's available today on eBay!

My Granddaughter's First Cruise

.. she was barely Eight at the time.

If you are wondering about children and cruising, don't! A cruise can be a great family vacation.

I took my little granddaughter on her first cruise when she had just turned 8, and we both had a wonderful time. She was on her best behaviour the whole time.

She looked AND behaved like a demure little princess on formal night, and I was very proud of her.

Best Cruise Lines for Families

What are the best cruise lines for families?
Well, a lot depends on your family, but if you are new to cruising, consider a line that caters to families, and has a lot of activities for the children.

Disney Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean all have childrens programs with organized activities. There are even special "teens-only" areas on some ships. 'Amusements,' which vary greatly from ship to ship. Most have sports decks, and some have a LOT more. For example, on Royal Caribbean's larger ships, there are flow riders, water parks, and, on their Oasis class ships, even a carousel.

On lines like Holland America and Celebrity, you'll typically find fewer children. While they do have childrens programs, activities aboard are generally more reserved. There are also fewer big scale 'amusements,' and more classes and demonstrations.

Fantastic collection of children wear. Very nice baby clothes. Love the shoes. Generally pediped shoes are very famous. They are too soft and vulnerable to use.

There are some absolutely stunning nautical clothes for children, whether or not they are cruising!

Hmm... Your granddaughter is a good example of 'why not', when it comes to exposing young kids and letting them 'learn' from experience! Children are the 'adults' of the future! :)

I love the little sailor suits. Really cute for anytime and especially for a cruise.

I can't help but agree! We are seeing less and less of the really little kids being dolled up these days, but when parents do go to the trouble, the oooos and aaaahs are non-stop from the other passengers.

I can't see us going on a cruise with my children, who don't keep still for 5 minutes. There are children who do, but I think mine would be a real handful. Great tips, information and cruise wear, nicely done. Blessed.

My wife and I are planning to go on a cruise next year. We never really put any thought into proper and improper cruise wear. Deciding on what we will wear on our cruise will have to be something that we put on the checklist
  • CruiseReady Nov 9, 2011 @ 1:03 pm | delete
A lot of what's "proper" depends on the line you choose. For example, you'll see more tuxedos than not on Cunard, and more very casual pants (even jeans) on Norwegian.

Great tips for selecting the right nautical cruise wear for kids. Another tip for formal wear, if you live in a large city, is to rent the clothes if you don't want to buy them. It will save substantial amounts of money. Like you said, "no ones the wiser".

Olympia Deluxe Garment Bag

We always pack our formal wear in a sturdy garment bag like this one. (Not one of the thing plastic ones.) That way, we can check it along with our other bags, rather than lugging it around. Since formal night is never the first night of the cruise, there's no need to carry it on with us.
