NavAlert Review

One of the best investments I think I ever made was in purchasing the NavAlert Speed Camera Alert System for my car. Initially skeptical of its claims, I decided to take it out on a road test through some of the most notorious red light camera speed traps in my city. Needless to say, I was more than impressed with the results.

I must first note that I didn't purchase NavAlert Speed Camera Alert System in the hopes of getting away with speeding or running red lights. I know of too many friends of mine who have been incorrectly cited for running a red light or speeding, when they were clearly in the right on the review of the camera video. I purchased NavAlert for three reasons:

  • To defend myself against faulty traffic citations, which are close to indefensible in every traffic court
  • Instinctive driving can sometimes turn off normal concentration while driving and result in bad driving habits
  • To avoid costly speeding tickets due to careless and/or inattentive driving habits

The NavAlert does not encourage you to speed or run red lights - far from it in fact. You actually are alerted to pay attention when the NavAlert detects a traffic camera, and this is probably its best feature - especially when driving through a city you are unfamiliar with. The NavAlert truly is the most innovative product since the radar detector. It can store up to 150,000 red light and speed camera locations throughout North America in its database. It can even distinguish between permanent, fixed speed camera locations and temporary, mobile speed traps - and warn you when entering a school zone or a high collision area due to its automatic GPS location and detection capabilities.

The NavAlert is very simple to install. All that the setup process requires is to attach the magnetic mount with the included adhesive tape to the dashboard of your car and plug it into your cigarette lighter receptacle or other 12 volt power source in your vehicle.

The NavAlert has two settings: "Safe Mode" and "Cam Mode." Although the "Safe Mode" is less sensitive and does not offer the highest protection as compared to "Cam Mode," the "Safe Mode" setting was the method I used in all of my road tests with extremely favorable results. I drove through approximately 20 or so high traffic locations in my city and the NavAlert was dead-on, 100% accurate, and warned me in an adequate amount of time before approaching a speed trap. Although this device simply looks like a little black box with LEDs in the front of it, it is loaded with features that pay for itself in the long run. Some of the other features are:

  • It can locate school zones
  • It has a Speedometer which at times is more accurate than the one on your vehicle
  • It has a compass built in based on GPS technology
  • It has the ability to lock in most frequent traveled areas for optimum security
  • It doubles as a GPS locator for emergency services

Perhaps my most favorite feature about this nifty device is that it can never become obsolete! It comes with a CD with software drivers for your computer and a USB interface cable which allows you to update NavAlert whenever needed - including downloading over 150,000+ new and existing speed camera locations, school zones, etc. based on GPS public data.

The NavAlert Speed Camera Alert System

NavAlert Review

Basic operation of the NavAlert Speed Camera Alert System is fairly simple. While driving, the LED display shows your current speed. When a warning is triggered, a chime is heard, followed by an audible voice which says "camera ahead - speed limit 60," for example. Instead of your current speed limit, the required speed limit in the camera zone will flash on the LED display before returning to your current speed. This typically occurs within about ½ of a mile from a camera zone, ample enough time to adjust your speed to avoid speeding tickets. If you are still over the speed limit and 200 yards away from the camera zone, the NavAlert will issue a repetitive, continuous warning saying "Reduce Speed" until the driver decreases speed. Once the camera zone is passed, an "all clear" chime will be heard from the NavAlert unit.

The NavAlert also doubles as an effective GPS locator, as it displays current latitude and longitude settings which is extremely helpful in an emergency situation, as this information can be relayed to emergency services and you can be located easily.

The NavAlert Speed Camera Alert System costs about the same as most speed and red light camera traffic tickets, and pays for itself in no time. A radar detector or laser detector cannot tell you where a red light or speed camera trap is located, nor are they 100% effective in warning you in an adequate amount of time before entering a speed trap zone. The NavAlert, being based on GPS data, is 100% accurate at all times.

There are a lot of other options out there such as license plate spray and license plate covers which are decreasing in their effectiveness because traffic camera settings can be altered to compensate for these products - these options are good secondary methods to protect yourself, but are becoming illegal in many areas at a rapid pace. The NavAlert, because of its GPS location capabilities, can never be classified as illegal because it is based on a public GPS database. When GPS locators are declared illegal, then the NavAlert will be, and we all know that this will never happen due to the usefulness of such devices.

Simply put, the NavAlert is the best investment you can buy to protect yourself from costly speeding tickets and perfect for improving your careless or inattentive driving habits.
