Neal Stephenson is the author of the Baroque Cycle, an enormous undertaking involving three novels consisting of more pages than I can count.  This unusual fellow pens some of the most memorable characters, and compels them to speak even more memorable lines.  He is also capable of writing the most amazingly frustrating books I have ever read (or tried to read).
