If The Worst Happens - Anyone Could Need Help Paying Vet Bills
Will you need help paying vet bills ? It is any family's worst nightmare. Its cherished and perhaps most vulnerable member needs urgent treatment. The money is not there and the veterinarian's verdict is not good. Without expensive treatment we could face the loss of one of the family. We would never let this happen but what can be done ?
How Can We Prevent The Worst From Happening?
When Should We Start?

When Should I Start My Pets Insurance
You need to think about pet insurance as soon as you can. You can never know when your pet may unfortunately need a vet. There is something also that you should consider and that is the pre-existing condition clause that most pet insurance companies enforce. In other words, if your uninsured pet should happen to develop an illness that may be long lasting, then you may find it difficult, at that stage, to insure them. There are other solutions apart from insurance that you may consider, such as starting a savings plan to specifically put aside money for your pet's health.
We Can't Pay The Vet's Bill
How Can This Have Happened?

When something like this situation happens, people will often pass the blame on someone else. The first candidate will often be the veterinarian.
Why do they charge so much? If they cared for animals, they would treat my animal for nothing.
Let me address these concerns.
Firstly, there are two (maybe three) reasons why they charge so much.
- Medicine is expensive.
- They are highly intelligent, highly trained people who have earned the right to charge handsomely for their services. Why You Should Respect Your Veterinarian
- Possibly, some of them are apt to overcharge.
Secondly, someone has to pay. In exceptional circumstances, maybe a vet will offer his/her services free, but why should they have to do so under more normal circumstances? It wouldn't be fair to expect this would it?
How Could We Have Made This Easier?
What Should We Have Done?

The first step in the process is to get yourself, or I should say get your pet, a vet practise that you can trust and rely on.
Your pet should be under the care of a vet from being a pup/kitten and you should all be happy with this vet. In other words, there should be a relationship between you, the vet and your vet. How to Choose the Right Veterinarian
You need to choose a vet when your pet is healthy, not when they are in need. Then a sound decision can be made without being in panic mode.
What Else Could We Have Done?

Let Your Veterinarian Help
Ask the veterinarian for her advice about pet insurance. If you chose this practise for their trustworthiness and helpfulness then they will naturally be the best people to consult about pet insurance. If for any reason they are unable or unwilling to recommend an insurance or if you are not happy with their recommendation or if you naturally like to compare prices then by all means do your own pet insurance comparison.
Never select on the basis of cost alone. There are many factors some of which may be particular to your type or breed of pet.

- Having insurance can relieve some of the financial stress at a very difficult time, and opens up treatment options. As a vet who's spent nearly 20 years in the ER, having those finances available can save lives.

- It's good to know how to prepare for problems and where to turn in an emergency too. Most people would rather go without themselves than see their pet suffer for want of medical attention -- and quite right too as they are so dependent on us.

- Thanks for your comments. Average price of pet insurance? Bit like car insurance, it depends on what level of cover, deductibles and other stuff. Probably about $30 but you need to consider all the options.

- As someone who has never owned a large animal (only a Guinea pig that lived 8 years) I find this really helpful. I hope get a puppy in the next year, and I have been doing a lot of research on breeds and health and costs.
One question, what is the average monthly cost for pet health insurance? Are there any statistics on this? (I'm just curious.) Thanks!
