Why use a frame for needlepoint?

By Dominique Siegler-Lathrop, Needlepoint expert at Bucherie.com

Without a frame it is not possible to needlepoint correctly. With the canvas held securely by the frame, both of your hands are free to stitch.

Needlepoint canvas is starched and stiffened, and would quickly become limp if held with the hands. It would lose its shape and the stitches thereby would lose their uniformity. Canvas held on a frame does not lose its stiffness, and its weave stays in place. The more tightly the canvas is stretched on the frame, the easier it is to pass the wool through the holes. Canvas should be stretched tight as a drum.

A hand-held canvas inevitably will begin to unravel on the sides, as the weave is very loose and fragile. Canvas is the support for the stitches that are going to adorn it. Canvas and wool form together a very solid surface, but separately, neither material has much identity. While waiting for the magical meeting between the two, canvas and wool, let us take great care of both, starting with the canvas, which cannot be stitched unless taut and stiff.
