Needlework

Needlework is a term used to describe creating an object using a needle and thread. It has come to mean decorative sewing or embroidery but in the past the term embraced crochet, knitting, tatting, and lace making. Today there are many construction and embellishing techniques that fall into this category. Alongside the traditional interpretation this term can also embrace embellishment techniques available to the contemporary textile practitioner.

Classic Stitches: Classic Stitches has a number of resources for members (you have to join but it is free) Under Know How their techniques section offers articles on various types of embroidery and techniques including, artiticles on Crewelwork, Goldwork, Blackwork, and Hardanger
Crafts at Bella online: A directory and site of resources which publishes feature articles, newsletters, hosts chat forums and provides an RSS feed.
Stitch: Stitch Magazine hosted by the Embroiderer's Guild (UK) contains articles on the collection, techniques, stitches and projects.
All Fiber Arts: All Fiber Arts a large weaving and spinning resource website edited by Päivi Suomi. The site includes over 1000 pages of resources, free patterns and instructions for weaving, spinning, dyeing, knitting, crochet, felting, papermaking, needlepoint, and sewing. Also the site hosts a Discussion Forum and Chat rooms.
Fabrics.net: A very large portal site with contemporary, conservation and historical information on needlework and fabric. Includes: Search Engine, Directory, Sources, Custom Search, Fabric Fact and Find Mailing List, Retail, Wholesale, Fiber and Fabric Information
Rug Hooking online: Rug Hooking online is an ezine well worth browsing if you are interested in rug hooking. The archives contain articles, instructional pieces, and patterns.

Lace

Arachne web: This is a site which is dedicated to lace making provided by Liz Reynolds who is particularly enthusiastic about 16th and early 17 century laces.
International Old Lacers: A website which has information about the organisation, patterns and links to suppliers, magazines, museums, members' web pages, and images of members' work.
Guild of Irish Lacemakers: A website that has information about the organisation as well as brief articles on Irish Lace
Lace Museum and Guild: A non-profit organization devoted solely to lace which showcases a collection of lace examples, lace tools, books and other materials covering the history of lace.
The Structures of Antique Lace: Antique Lace the personal collection of Marla Mallett a textile researcher. This site is well illustrates and documented with a good bibliography.
Lacemaking and its History: A well illustrated, researched and annotated site covering all types of lace

Tatting

This n Tat: A huge resource for those interested in tatting. The site contains instructions on how to tat, lessons and patterns and tips.
Tattered: A site devoted to tatting with particularly clear illustrated instructions on how to tatt. It also houses patterns and tips on tatting.

Weaving and Spinning

Collections of stitches and how to do them

sharon b's Stitch Dictionary: A dictionary of needlework and embroidery stitches illustrated with step by step photographs. To assist those who are new to the craft of hand embroidery each stitch is categorised as to the degree of difficulty.
Rissa's Pieces Stitch Dictionary: This collection of stitches which also includes beaded stitches

Classic Stitches: Classic Stitches has a number of resources for members. These include a Stitch Glossary listed under Know how in the stitching zone. The Glossary is in alphabetical order, with detailed illustrations and directions.
Crochet at Annies Attic: Directions are illustrated with clear step by step drawings and often videos accompany the stitch which you have the choice of downloding.
