About Quilting

QUILTING

The following is taken from Wikipedia.org and further informaton about these 6 steps can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quilting

Traditional quilting is a six-step process that includes: 1) selecting a pattern, fabrics and batting; 2) measuring and cutting fabrics to the correct size to make blocks from the pattern; 3) piecing (sewing cut pieces of fabric together using a sewing machine or by hand to make blocks) blocks together to make a finished "top"; 4) layering the quilt top with batting and backing, to make a "quilt sandwich"; 5) quilting by hand or machine through all layers of the quilt sandwich; and 6) squaring up and trimming excess batting from the edges, machine sewing the binding to the front edges of the quilt and then hand-stitching the binding to the quilt backing.

COUNTED CROSS STITCH

Counted Cross Stitch is worked on evenweave fabric and the number of threads between stitches are counted. The stitches are crossed so the even x's form a pattern. About Applique

APPLIQUE

Applique is often used in needlework projects such as in quilting. A smaller piece of fabric is laid on top of another fabric and sewn in place to form a decorative accent. The edges of the small piece are usually turned under and then straight stitched in place. A satin stitch can be used over the straight stitch or other decorative stitches can be used around the edge of the applique piece.

About Samplers

SAMPLERS

A sampler is embroidered needlework and was used hundreds of years ago when printed patterns were not easily available. Samplers were a form of reference material for learning various stitches. They often consisted of letters and numbers and sometimes the name of the embroiderer and the date were also worked into the design.

A cross stitch sampler by the daughter of Myles Standish is the oldest known United States sampler. It is in Pilgrim Hall in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Today's samplers often have quotes and patterns are available as shown on the following Squidoo lens:

LOOM KNITTING

Loom knitting is easy knitting, a needlework technique that does not require needles. The yarn in looped around a loom which is usually round and the yarn is worked in these loops with a hook.
