Neighbourhood Watch Reduce Crime In Your Community Now
Ranked #4,170 in Culture & Society, #91,206 overall
reduce your local crime and build secure confident communities with a neighbourhood watch scheme
Neighbourhood Watch is one the most well organised and well established crime prevention programs in the UK. It works well because of enthusiastic community support and the drive and energy of volunteers to set up and manage neighbourhood watch schemes.
Neighbourhood Watch and its sister scheme Home Watch supports about 170,000 groups across England and Wales covering 7.9 million households.
We have a very active neighbourhood watch in our area. The balance needs to be struck between concerned observation and becoming a busy body. We have been able to slow speeding residents through peer pressure, and we also have had to be mindful about posting opinions about concerns and groups on message boards and fora that might run the risk of breaking the law. So whilst neighbourhood watch is a good principle its application needs to stay in tune with those key principles rather than become well intentioned but misguided vigilante operation.

How to start a Neighbourhood Watch group
the basics
Since 1982 there have been thousands of neighbourhood watch groups set up and organised. This means there's lots of best practice about how to start a neighbourhood watch group. Neighbourhood Watch schemes are the largest voluntary scheme in the UK!
To start a Neighbourhood Watch scheme up you need to contact your local Crime Prevention Officer at your police station. You will need a co-coordinator. Our village has a great co-ordinator who liaises with the CPO, invites him to meetings, ensures notifications are posted to residents and the like. The coordinator is a very busy role.
