Neo Geo - Bigger, Badder, Better
SNK's Neo Geo is a hardware family that began in 1989 with the arcade version of the cartridge based Neo Geo console. The arcade system is known as MVS, or Multi Video System, and gave amusement operators the ability toe have up to 6 games in one cabinet. The home console - AES, or Advanced Entertainment System - offered arcade faithful versions of the arcade games. The home console was initially available as a rental unit. However, after it became apparent that some customers were willing to pay $650 for a console, it was released to the general public in Japan, in July 1990. The graphics and sound were very much superior to other consoles available at the time. A CD based version of the cartridge hardware was released in 1994, as well as less powerful handhelds titled Neo Geo Pocket and Neo Geo Pocket Color, and a newer Neo Geo arcade system titled Hyper Neo Geo 64.
The last official Neo Geo MVS / AES release was Samurai Shodown 5 Special - however, there is still a strong fanbase surrounding the system. GameTap, Wii Virtual Console, XBox Live Arcade, and PSN currently offer Neo Geo titles for play via emulation. Many of SNK's famous franchises debuted on the Neo Geo, including King of Fighters, Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown, and Metal Slug.

Neo Geo and SNK Information
In 1990, the video game developer SNK teamed with ADK to create the video game console called NEOGEO ("new land"). It was created for arcades, but simultaneously compatible for home play. Neo Geo had a huge impact on video game history in the 1990s. Check out the 20th Anniversary page at:Neo Geo Museum
SNK Playmore is a Japanese video game hardware and software company. SNK (the company's original name) stands for Shin Nihon Kikaku (or, "New Japan Project"). SNK was first founded by Eikichi Kawasaki in Osaka, Japan in July 1978. The original SNK existed until October 22, 2001. Kawasaki, anticipating the coming end of his 1st company, founded Playmore - which became SNK Playmore in 2003. More at:
