My Beloved 2003 Dodge SRT4
What a trip it has been with my car, a 2003 SRT4 that I bought in 2005, with 27,000 miles on her. Here it is almost 7 years and 220,000 miles later and I never could have foreseen the amazing journey it has been.
It all began in 2002, after a break up. I was realizing that I didn't have a passion in my life, or a hobby.
I spent some time pondering this. Then I thought about what I had heard growing up, in remembering what you loved as a child or teenage years, without judgement, and then I remembered it was cars.
I remembered having the absolute best time of my life with my bitchin' black '67 Camaro at 16 years old. We ended up going over the whole car including replacing the 1968 Chevy 283 small block with a 1986 4-bolt main 350. That sounded better to me at the time, although were I to go back, I would have kept and rebuilt my 283.
(My friend did rebuild that motor. Around a year later he showed up in his 1968 blue Firebird, and it sounded so amazing. I asked what is in it and he smiled and said, 'your motor'.)
My First Car - 1967 Camaro
This is the only picture that I can find (notice the 'figure' next to it, I have no idea what that is)

This picture was taken before I traded my motorcycle for a new set of wheels and a spoiler. Any classic Camaro fans are probably cringing at the idea that I got rid of these, but I was 16, and much preferred the looks of the Krager SS wheels.
I had the time of my life with this car, some of my fondest childhood memories, truly a place of refuge for me, from what at times could seem like a confusing world.
We eventually re-did the entire interior as well as the motor, the transmission, exhaust, and even an original factory wiring harness. I found a store in New Hampshire called Camaros Plus, where they had original parts and original inspired parts. I ended up putting in a carpet, headliner, rear deck cover and original seats, along with all the original knobs on the dashboard. Too bad they didn't have cell phone cameras back then, as I would love to have some pictures from those days, especially when my friend and I had the entire interior out and ground down to sheet metal to paint it in it's entirety.
Neo in New York City
One of the many trips we took.

I had such a blast driving my car around New York City. I was proud of the fact that it was laying around 400 wheel horsepower at the time and rather than your typical highly modified garage queen, I was 4 hours away from home, driving around New York City. My motto is and has always been, cars are supposed to be driven! You will see photographic evidence that I do drive Neo a lot, as she is only 9 years young.

Neo and Big Bro
I had to take this picture

I saw this Viper at the Pike, or the Berlin Turnpike, which is a cruising spot around here that we frequent during the summer near Hartford Connecticut. I asked the owner if I could line up next to him, and take a picture. He obliged and I ended up with a nice picture of the two of them, don't they look good together?
The SRT4 is the baby ancestor to the Dodge Viper SRT8. If you look at the front grill, you can see the similarities, and the Viper is sort of built like a stretched out Neon, with the same hood scoop etc. Perhaps I should say that the Neon is built a bit like the Viper.

I still don't think it looks like my car, but it is :)

Neo and the Gang

Back when my sister had an Acura Integra and her boyfriend had an s2000. We cruised around all the time on our cars. All three were turbo, and all three ran 12's. I still have mine and her now ex boyfriend still has the s2k. We are all still on good terms and he and I talk. He has by now fully built it with a big turbo and hopes to run 9's.

New SRT4 Front Mount Intercooler
My first big mod, an AGP Race Intercooler.

This was a close up picture my sister took of my fmic not long after the install. I thought this was a huge deal at the time to install. It took me forever.
Now I can swap an intercooler in an hour or two. This was not the type of thing that I learned overnight. What I learned was from the forums, and people I met through the forums. There is an amazing synergistic exchange of information on forums, where issues are shared nationally, and solved very quickly, as hundreds or thousands of members share their experiences and knowledge.
I started out with this car barely knowing how to change the air filter, and not even knowing how to change the oil.
Now it's a different story. I can do just about anything, as I have had the car for almost 7 years and have put over 200,000 miles on it, close to 250,000 as a matter of fact, and in the meantime I have fixed just about everything.
I have uninstalled everything that goes into the engine bay, and then installed it twice, just during the motor swap, never mind all the axles, clutches and the like that go along with wear and tear, and a vehicle that is raced.
I remember as I was learning about the car, that I wished I knew how to do everything, so I wouldn't be afraid of anything breaking. Now I can say I feel that way, as I have just about done it all, aside physically build the motor or head.
I've pressed in and out my own bushings and ball joints, done the brakes many times, seen a transmission rebuilt more than once, and done all the components that are common, such as the suspension and engine components etc.
The electrical stuff I have had help with. I could figure that out too, but I have been lucky to enough to have a few friends who help me with that, which is one of the perks of being a member of a car forum community for some time.
Parked At The Dragway

My First Dyno - 2003 Dodge SRT4 - ATP GT3076R Kit
300 hp at 14 psi

This is a picture taken at my first dyno session shortly after installing the turbo kit. We only ran 14 psi, and made a nice safe tune.
I must say, after having just over 200 hp to the wheels, and incrementally up to 270 with the WGA and stage 1 ecu, just a shade over 300 hp felt a lot different. One thing about the bigger turbo is that the power curve just keeps rising all the way to redline, which = fun :)

SRT4 Return Line

I needed some more fuel so I could run more boost and try for my low 11 second run. It eventually worked, as I was able to run 11.1 and a couple 11.2s.
This entailed dropping the tank, and putting a bunch of -4AN and -6 AN fittings on stainless fuel hose, for an extra fuel line coming from my tank, along with a fuel pressure regulator, that ultimately allows me to use more fuel.
You can see how it usually looks in the kitchen when I am in the middle of these projects.
It's always worth it at the end, once it all works out and the car is running good.

Garrett GT3076R DBB ATP Kit
My first big turbo install

One year after purchasing Neo, it was big turbo time. I had started researching big turbos as running as fast as possible down the quarter mile was the main reason I got the SRT4, as I had seen two of them running 12's with minimal mods. I had been theoretically pricing out what it would cost to run 12's, and I couldn't find anything even close to the SRT. The rest is history.

Turbo Comparison: Garrett GT3076R vs Stock
A picture I took before we installed the turbo kit.

I got a kick out of how much bigger the GT30R was over my oem turbo, so I snapped this picture on the garage floor before installing it.

The only thing about this was the eyelids I spent way too long on, and ended taking them off since I couldn't get the wrinkles out.
New Paint On The Wheels
Thanks sis!

I came home from a weekend away and when I returned, I came home to discover this...my sister had taken my wheels off, brought them all the way over to a shop, spent the day sanding and stripping them and then she finally painted them. That was a nice surprise.
I have since repainted them, as they eventually chipped some, the same color of course and as a matter of fact, it is the same paint that my sister used.. I love the gunmetal color on the stock wheels that came on the car.
Painting The Stock SRT4 Wheels
I decided it was time to redo the paint

They look much better. I hadn't painted wheels before so it took awhile. I washed them off a couple times, first with a degreaser, then windex, then lots of water.
The first one had some orange peel, as I sprayed on too much wheel paint, but starting with the second, I figured out a method so I didn't go over the same spots too many times, and I am pretty happy with how they came out :)
It took just a couple hours one afternoon. I must say, it's comparable to a fresh coat of wax, once it's all done, you just kick back and admire your work for a bit, and then of course, go take it for a cruise. I let her sit overnight before driving her, just so they would dry properly.
The Mileage On The SRT
The last picture I have of a cool even number until I eventually hit 250,000, which isn't very far off.

I missed the 245,000 mark a couple weeks ago, and only got a picture of 245,002 or so IIRC.
Oil Feedline Burst

This happened on the highway. It was the second time this happened. I wasn't aware this time, as the first time it happened was while the car was idling in a driveway and I saw the oil spilled everywhere.
This time I was driving on the highway and suddenly I saw the oil light go on, and shut the car down.
Thankfully I had a spare oil line in the car, and there was a rest area right there that I coasted into, for come to find out I had almost no oil in the car at all...good thing for synthetic.
Royal Purple Motor Oil
First Motor in the SRT4
Only picture I took

Once I hit 100,000 miles, after hundreds of passes at the dragway, I decided the motor is probably tired and I should play it safe and put in a new one, since it was Spring, and there was the whole race season ahead, and I didn't want to deal with this in the middle of the season by surprise, so I did some preventative maintenance.
The first round didn't go so well, as I bought a used block, and after we finished the install, it ended up having crank walk, not a common thing for the 2003-2005 Chrysler A853.
Nevertheless, I needed my car, ordered a new one Monday, picked it up Friday, headed back to my friends house Friday night and drove home that Sunday, and haven't had an issue with it after 145,000 on it since the install.
I learned so much those two weekends, doing two motor installs. After that there really is no project that intimidates me.
2004 Chrysler A853 Transportation
I rented this car just to transport the motor.

I was against the wall with time and money, so I rented this car that Friday, rushed to the dealer, where my friend gave me a great price, and drove 3 hours south through rush hour traffic, and worked all weekend swapping the second motor, which eventually turned out to be a success. Two motor swaps in a week, that was fun.
My Current SRT4 Back Up Motor
I like to plan ahead

I have this sitting on the couch, as I didn't expect my current motor to last as long as it did. I have a bunch of spare parts ready to go in the car when needed, including the full guts of an SRT4 transmission, and a set of back up pistons and rods.
My girlfriend bought me this block for my birthday and I received it around Valentine's day, as an early birthday/Valentine's day gift :)
Now I am not sure what the plan is, since the motor and head have over 145,000 miles on them, and the turbo is coming up on 200,000 miles with hundreds of passes at the dragway.
'
I am thinking I will just wait it out and see. Once I detect something on it's way, I will replace it. I was going to swap it out before, but a few friends asked why if it runs fine, and I realized, they have some pretty good points, and decided to wait until it's necessary.
Spare OEM SRT4 Pistons and Rods

I also have a spare set of pistons and rods just laying around just in case I need them. Yes I do like to look ahead, along with the spare motor on my couch and the new pistons and everything else.
I just love the SRT4 pistons and rods, as mine have been able to handle 440-520 wheel horsepower for over 145,000 miles, so I have faith in them, and most people just give these away.
These have only a couple thousand miles from a car nearby that I discovered on Craigslist, where he had them left over after crashing his car.
Typical Day Under The Car

This is me under the car. I can't remember what I was doing, as I have done this so many times.
I think I was doing either a clutch install, and taking a breather and my girlfriend snapped this lovely awe inspiring picture.
I am under the front of the car in this picture, with the intercooler pipe above me, which is the oval shaped black coupler with the silver ring inside.
I need to remember to wear goggles when I do this, since getting stuff in the eyes is no fun.
Spare Transmission Gear Set

I picked up a spare gear set of a local parts car that I found, just as a back up, for when they fail.
I'm not too worried since my first transmission lasted for 175,000 miles until the input shaft snapped as I was cruising. That was with 500 track passes and after seeing 500 wheel horsepower a few times, and 400 for almost 100,000 miles.
This includes 1-5 gears and reverse, which you can see if you know what you're looking for. These just slide into the transmission case.
Also there is the gear selector under the small cover that is laying next to all the gears on the input shaft and output shaft.
Clutch Failure

This was with a Clutch Masters Stage 4 6 puck, after being in my car for a week. It is built to handle 400 hp, so I knew it may not last, as my car has a good deal over 400 hp, and a good amount more than that when I turn up the boost and add racegas.
My clutch failed and I needed a clutch for the time being, so I threw it in, but it also failed within a week, a little quicker than I had hoped, but it got me through.

Racing At Maryland International Raceway
8 hour drive for a weekend of racing

The World Cup Finals happened the second weekend in November where all the fastest street cars, both muscle and sport compact come from all over the country. You see some of the best import vs domestic races from anywhere.
I was knocked out in the second round at 1am after the main events were over, since I was in the 11 second category, which is slower, so we were less of a priority.
Believe it or not, we raced until the wee hours of the morning which I thought was the coolest thing. From what I understand they have implemented a 12:00 midnight curfew now, but that was fun at the time.

- I have a 2004 SRT-4. Im getting a 3076r from a friend an it comes with a 38mm wastegate and I was curious what turbo manifold to use? I'm new to the tuner scene and am just starting to learn the ins and outs. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

- I use the ATP Turbo cast manifold. It is also HPCcoated, which is supposed to be good for spool and helping it cool down fast. I've been happy with it.
