Create Art With Neocolor II Watersoluble Wax Pastels

Ranked #1,599 in Arts & Design, #20,822 overall

Paint Cotton Fabrics, Silks, Paper and More--For Fine Artists, Fiber Artists, Mixed Media Artists

I first learned about this product during an art exploration phase with colored pencil drawings/paintings. Since then, I discovered that Neocolor II can also be used to paint and color cotton and silk fabrics and paper. Here is an example of using Neocolor II with silk. The high contrast made by the black resist against the beautiful Neocolor pigments makes this a brilliant silk painting.

It's easy to use . . . and here's an amazing fact--this product has been certified as non-toxic!

Hope this lens inspires you. Make Magic with Neocolor II~~Fannie Narte

Create Art Using Neocolor II Watersoluble Wax Pastels

Work-in-Progress Lens

This lens is a work in progress. New information, images and links are added on a regular basis.

This lens was originally created to document my discoveries and techniques using this medium. I discovered Neocolors in 2007 and have been experimenting with it since then. It's probably one of my favorite supplies to use in my artwork. I especially like to use Neocolors to add color to fabrics because they're non-toxic in comparison to dyes. I created a tutorial to show you how I use Neocolors. The link is provided below. See "Leaf" art quilt tutorial.

I would also like to add more links to this lens. If you use Neocolors in your artwork and would like to contribute links or share your discoveries in this medium, including likes and dislikes, successes and failures, please contact me.

I am an affiliate of Blick Art Materials and Amazon.com. Thanks!

TUTORIAL--Fiber Art

BEFORE--"Leaf" Art Quilt

This a photograph of the first step in making this "Leaf" art quilt.

After tracing a 7" x 7" square onto a piece of 8" x 8" white muslin using a water soluble marker, I applied the pastels onto the muslin. The pastels were applied freely and without much thought.

It looks raw, doesn't it? At this stage, this painting doesn't look like it will transform into anything pretty.

AFTER--"Leaf" Art Quilt

This is a photograph of the completed "Leaf" art quilt.

What do you think? The magic of blending the pastels with water changes the image dramatically.

See the amazing evolution of this "Leaf" art quilt in my step-by-step tutorial.

SHIBORI-LIKE TECHNIQUE USING NEOCOLORS ON MUSLIN

An Experiment With Neocolors on Fabric

Neocolor II Crayons on muslinEach of these three pieces of muslin were hand painted with two different Neocolors and twisted around a glass bead and scrunched before drying overnight. For more details about my techniques used for creating these shibori-like fabrics, click on the photo. It will send you to my blog post detailing my process.

USE NEOCOLORS ON SILK HABOTAI FABRIC

Neocolors on Silk Habotai FabricI added text using white water-based resist. After it was completely dry, I added the Neocolors, blended it with water using a fan brush and let it air dry completely. Then I heat set it with an iron. Although I haven't done intense testing, after the pigments were heat set with an iron, they seem to be permanent. I will use these painted silks in my art quilts, which will not require laundering, and my wash tests were successful. If you try this technique, please share your results in the comment module below. I will post the results of my stability tests of using Neocolors on silk here.

If you click on the photograph of the painted silk fabric to the right, it will take you to my blog post explaining my process and thoughts, and includes more photographs.

PAINT YOUR OWN FABRICS TO USE IN YOUR TRADITIONAL QUILTS

Pineapple Block

This is a two-inch square pineapple block. The black and gold fabric is a commercial piece. The other fabrics are white cotton which were painted with Neocolors in different gradations. Painting your own fabrics for an art quilt, especially when working small, is a fun option.

MAKE MAGIC WITH NEOCOLORS

Your colored dried fabric can be used in digital applications. Scan your painted fabric and upload it into your computer's photo software and play with it. This is a digital Kaleidoscope image produced from my Morning Painting. See the original painted fabric below titled "Morning Painting."

MORNING PAINTING

8" x 10" cotton fabric

My day in the studio starts with a morning painting--an original term. A morning painting is a quick, unplanned 15-20 minute painting on muslin. It's not meant to be pretty, although it often results in magical surprises. Morning paintings are a way to just show up, do something quick and easy and call the project finished in a short amount of time. Instant gratification!

In this piece, I randomly picked colors and added it to my fabric using my fan brush and water.

MORNING PAINTING 2

8" x 10" cotton fabric

Here's another morning painting. I added colors working horizontally across the fabric working from bottom to top and pushed some of the colors vertically overlapping other colors. I worried a little about making mud, but I soon remembered that worry is not a part of the morning painting process, so I pushed forward anyway. And yes, I did make some mud, but I call it "shadows." ;-D

ATCs, (Artist Trading Cards), are miniature works of art done in any media, and is 2.5" x 3.5" in size. ATCs are usually traded rather than sold.
