If you want your car to look a whole lot cooler, you may want to install some really neat neon car lights. While most people usually have theirs installed at their local car shop with a little guidance, you may probably be able to accomplish this on your own. Before you start, there are of course some things which you will need to get first.

The Tools of the Trade

You will need several materials in order to install neon car lights on your car. You will need: an electric drill (with screw-gun attachments and screw drivers), a pencil or a marker, a center punch (necessary for a good drill start), electrical wire-strippers (in order to join wires together), solder and soldering gun a heat gun (to heat the shrink tubing for the soldered joints) and a silicon sealant (used to seal up holes).

Some Precautions and Important Reminders

Before you do any work on your vehicle that involves electricity, remember to always disconnect its battery. This is necessary for you to eliminate any electrical spark action and also to avoid disrupting the electronic system of your car. Do this by disconnecting the negative battery cable of your vehicle. Additionally, it is also very wise for you to have your service manual near you should you need to get into the specifics of how the electrical system of your vehicle works. Additionally, you also need to check the different locations of your vehicle where you plan to mount the hardware you will attach through holes so you will be sure not to pierce or even damage the crucial parts like the fuel, brake and electrical lines.

Getting In The Action

The first thing you need to do is to determine the most favored location for you to place the tubes in, as well as making sure they are far from areas that have fuel, exhaust, have moving parts, gets warm easily and places that require a lift jack for raising. While your car is raised up (make sure the lift jack is very safe even before you get to lie underneath your car), try to test fit your neon light tubes where you would like them to mount. This will also be based on the kit diagrams as well as the instructions that came with it. Always remember that it is always best to mount the tubes so they are found in the center of the entire length of the car so you will have optimum lighting. Take note that the tubes must always be positioned where the chassis is so they cannot be seen, as visible tubes are usually prohibited by the law in many different countries and cities.

Get The Neon In

The neon tubes of light are then mounted on your car's chassis by using the plastic brackets and the small metals that are also included as part of your kit. Using the brackets that are first installed on the tube, try to lift the tube assembly to get it into place and then mark all the places (using the marker or pencil) where you intend to drill the holes. After doing so, you will then have to center punch each location to ensure that you have a good area for when you start to use your drill. Slowly and carefully use the drill to make holes which you will use in order to mount the brackets. Like any project that requires the drilling of holes, you will need to apply a tiny amount of the silicon sealer before you screw it in to help protect its metal parts from rusting.

Some Great Tips to Do It

The best way for you to do the mounting of the neon tubes is for you to start putting the screws found in the brackets (which are part of the kit itself). Make sure you hold the bracket steadily in place and then insert the screws. Tighten the screws in the hole, all the while making sure that the wires are coming from the tubes are also facing the front part of your car. It is always best to keep these screws tight so you can hold the bracket in place and then you do it again once you finish installing and tightening each one until it is firmly in place. In order to do this, you will need a screwdriver attachment on your cordless drill.
After you have successfully mounted your first neon light tube, you can then continue doing the same on the other tubes. You can install the other tubes using the same procedure. Pretty soon, you will be showing it off to all your friends and getting them to want to have the same thing done to their vehicles.
