Neopets Video Games

The basic story is that the Darkest Faerie was imprisoned in a statue long ago and is back for revenge.

When you begin playing, you're a young male Lupe (wolf) Neopet on a farm. Of course your Lupe dreams of knighthood and this sets him off on a grand adventure. In time he meets a female Acara wizard who joins in with the quest, and you play both, changing which one of these is active to meet the challenges you face.

Like many role playing games, it offers subtle lessons in service to community and helping others.

Neopets fans will see lots of familiar and well-loved pets, pet pets, and characters, but knowledge of the online game is not necessary to enjoy this video game.

Rated E10+ for Everyone, 10 and up.

You play as one of four petpets in this adventure role playing game featuring real-time combat and a 3-D environment. As the petpet, you must discover the secret of the fabled Wand of Wishing and save the land. Delve into dark caverns, spooky catacombs, cloud plains and other mystical realms, and compete with others in the Battledome.

I have the DS version. Your character is a Neopet and can be the various species and normal colors they're available in, of either gender. The story is well done, and the art is nice, keeping the feel Neopets fans will find familiar.

You play a version of Cellblock (if you haven't played Cellblock on the Neopets site, it's similar to connect four) against a succession of opponents, working your way through the storyline. As you do, you earn more petpets, who give you strategic bonuses. You're limited in how many petpets you can use at a time, increasing the emphasis on strategy.

There are a few mini games, but each only appears once. One is similar to the Destructomatch game from the website, which I enjoyed seeing because Destructomatch is a longtime favorite of mine. Another is a quick draw game that was a lot of fun.

Skill-wise, the play is beyond my four-year-old's ability, but my eight-year-old has fun with it. I enjoyed it, though my one complaint would be that there was not enough of the mini games, nor of the variety we could have seen if they'd added a few more.

It's a cool bonus that achievements in the game unlock codes that can be entered on the website for virtual prizes for your Neopet. Unfortunately the codes are per cartridge/ds, not per player, which is not really fair in a family of gamers, several of whom have their own Neopets accounts.
