Overland Trip from Kathmandu to Lhasa

In April, 2007,  I did a trip to Nepal to look for interesting products for our "Lanna Charm"  website.

After spending 10 days sightseeing and shopping around Kathmandu,and a few days trekking, I booked an overland trip to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. I had always wanted to do this trip, and I still rate it the best one I have done so far. Words cannot describe the scenery, and even the best photos don't do it justice.

When I left Kathmandu I traveled by vehicle, (a 7 seater van), to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. The only way to gain entry to Tibet was to be part of a tour group, and have the correct paperwork, (group visa).

I don't usually travel on package tours, preferring to make my own arrangements, but this one was O.K. Our tour guide was from Tibet, and looked after us very well. The trip took us 5 days, and the scenery was incredible. We crossed some high passes, one was 5,200 meters, that gave spectacular views of the Himalayas, to the south, and the Tibetan hills and mountains to the north.

We have just released a new addition to our ever growing range of handcrafted fashion accessories, from northern Thailand.

This pretty little "mini-handbag" comes from Chiang Mai, is handmade from split bamboo, and is both unusual and attractive. It has a triangular shape which allows it to stand alone, and can be folded flat (collapsed) when not in use. The Chiang Mai "Bamboo" Mini-Handbag is lined with cotton fabric with inside pocket, has a handy loop and button closer, and comes in a wide range of patterns and colors. There are 2 sizes, the larger one is 12.5 " long, 4.5" wide, and is 6" tall, not including the wooden handles. The smaller size is 9" long, 4.5" wide, and is 5" tall, not including the wooden handles. The smaller size bag is also available with longer, woven straw handles. Both bags are available on both a retail, and a wholesale basis, and can be seen in the Bags section of our Lanna Charm website.

Below are just some of the many different types of hemp fabric we use to make our handbags, shoulder bags, totes and purses.
The rolls we use are 12" - 14" wide and up to 30 feet long, which are ideal for making bags etc.
Wider rolls are available, they are 1 yard wide.

This beautiful stone washed cotton is hand woven in Myanmar, then the stone washing is carried out in Thailand.
We use it for making handbags and shoulder bags but because it is so soft it would be perfect for making clothing and scarves.
The cotton fabric comes in rolls approximately 26 feet long and 3 feet wide, and is available in a wide range of colors.

We now design and produce our own line of handcrafted silk handbags!

Most of the "silk" bags and purses on sale these days are mass produced using synthetic "silk" fabric, woven on mechanical weaving looms in an industrial setting.

We handcraft our own designs, using genuine handwoven silk fabric, produced in the traditional manner. Because the pieces of silk we use to make our bags are unique, so too is the finished product, with no 2 bags being alike.

Our latest model is named "Mia", after our friend's daughter. We now have 3 bags named after her daughters, including Chelsea and Rhiannon.



"Mia" is a lovely handbag, featuring different patterns on either side of the bag, stylish chrome steel handles, and a cotton lining with a handy zip pocket.
