Nerine bowdenii bring a splash of pink to the garden in October

My garden in Royston is mostly greens, yellows and blues during the spring and summer. However, in October there is a splash of pink from the flowers of Nerine bowdenii. These bulbs have established themselves from a few rather expensive bulbs planted about 15 years ago.

What are Nerines?

A genus of 30 species of generally half-hardy bulbous plants, of which only one, Nerine bowdenii, is hardy enough to be grown outdoors in the UK. The species have strap-shaped mid-green leaves, which usually appear just after the flowers. The strikingly iridescent flowers appear from August to November on 30-60cm stems. They are composed of 6 narrow strap-shaped petals that are often crimped and twisted, arranged in a lose umbels on the top of the leafless stems, and range from red through pink to white in colour.

This species originates from Cape Province in South Africa, and is hardy enough to be grown outdoors in the UK, although it may not survive a very severe winter. The photos on the lens show this species flowering in October in the garden in Royston, Herts, UK.

There is also a variety, "Fenwick's Variety", that is larger and more vigorous than the species with deeper pink flowers.

A Nerine bowdenii bulb produce a leafless flower stem of up to 60cm from September to November

Each flower stem has a loose umbel of up to 12 pink flowers which open separately over time

Each flower is about 10cm across and has 6 pink petals which curl away from the pink stamens and sepals

From the side you can see that the flowers are funnel-shaped

Nerines on Wikipedia

Nerine ()Sunset Western Garden Book, 1995:606?607 is a genus of plants belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family. Native to South Africa, there are about 30 different species in the genus. Nerine have been widely cultivated and much hybridized and are now spread world wide.

It is a bulb plant, with each bulb being about 3-5 cm in diameter. In late winter and spring the plant produces several strap-shaped, dull green leaves, about 20 cm long and 1 cm broad, arranged in two rows. The leaves die down by late spring and the bulb is then dormant until late summer.

In fall each bulb produces a single naked stem about 30 cm tall which bears a cluster of 2 to 12 funnel-shaped pink flowers at their tops. Each flower is about 4 cm diameter.

Overall the plant has similar growing characteristics to the Belladonna Lily, though it is much smaller. Another similar plant is the Lycoris.

The Nerines are a New Zealand band which is named after this flower.
