Netbook Computers - The Power You Need in the Palm of Your Hand
A comparison of 5 brands and 12 models of netbooks. Even though cellphones have more and more functions and seem able to do just about everything, it's still valuable to have a full-function computer that's capable of running all of your software, doing work and showing it off for presentations.
This is especially true for business and school and the best solution is a netbook computer - big enough to do real work, but small enough to travel with effectively and to use anywhere.
These great little computers feature smaller standard keyboards, small but very legible screens and plenty of room for files and more software, all at a greatly reduced price.
Review 5 brands and over a dozen models below and find the right netbook computer for your needs.

Netbook Features
- Screen Size and Resolution - Since the computer is smaller, some users are conscious of having too small of a screen. Most of these models have small but clear screens that give you more than enough surface area to see what you're doing while having multiple windows open. A good screen should be around 10 inches, measured from top left corner to bottom right corner.
- Battery Life - A portable computer lives and dies by it's battery. You don't always have a plug-in when you're on the road and you don't want it to die at a critical time (save often!).
- Processor - Netbooks pack a lot of power in a small case. More powerful processors are required to run more intense software. A netbook will probably not be your game player on the road, but it should be capable to process video, music and software that is memory and processing intensive. 1.66 Ghz is a good starting point. Most netbooks will be similar as they invariable use the Intel Atom N270 or N280 designed for these small computers.
- RAM - RAM helps your computer work on multiple files or programs without bogging down the system. Due to limited RAM, gaming is not a strength with netbooks, but you should be able to runs several other applications with ease. Most netbooks have 1 GB of RAM and are upgradable to 2 GB if needed. All netbook RAM should be DDR2 which is typical of all notebook computers, and if upgradable, features 1 DIMM slot to insert an additional 1GB RAM chip.
- Hard Drive - The more business you do, the more storage you need for software and big files. A big hard drive is critical, and you can also always get by with additional USB storage for supplemental storage capacity. That being said, triple digit GB storage is available and should be sought out.
- Operating System - Most netbooks carry Windows XP which gives you flexibility, and almost bulletproof uptime. For those who miss XP, a netbook is a good way to keep what you like, while Vista or 7 fans will miss out. XP is also used to keep prices down, and that's one of the joys of the netbook. Update: Apparently, 7 is also going to be available so keep an eye out.
- Price - Speaking of which, the bottom line is important to a lot of people, especially students on a budget, or businesses who are issuing netbooks to multiple staff members. An entire sales team with their own netbooks adds up in a hurry. Best to have a computer that does everything necessary for roadwork and presentations without breaking the bank. Less than $400 is a good standard for a netbook, about half of what you'd pay for a low end tower, and far less than a top-of-the-line system.
- Miscellaneous - There are lots of other little features that I will try to touch on, but the most critical of which should be built in Wi-Fi. If your netbook won't find and connect to free or pay Wi-Fi systems, you're missing out.
Netbook Uses
Students - I wish I had these when I was in school. Taking notes is awesome when you can type them out, save and categorize your lectures, work on projects on the fly (especially if you're programming, doing models, running simple simulations, and the like). Computer time in common areas can also be limited due to crowding and hours of operation. Need to write a paper and the commons are closed? You're out of luck. Since it takes up so little space, it's awesome when on your desk in the dorm or apartment, and it isn't cumbersome to carry to class. Mom and Dad: Spend the $300 that will help your kids more than any other supplies combined.
Writers - As a writer who often has reason to meet others to go over ideas, record concepts and bang out scripts, treatments and other content, it's indispensable when you're meeting someone and your slime netbook is ready to go to take notes or develop useful content. Takes up a lot less space than a standard laptop when you're traveling, at someone else's house or at your local coffeeshop (whether you're working or just posing).
Businesspeople - Particularly salespeople as I've said before, these little beauties are so valuable to a busy person who needs to turn a screen around anywhere and show a client or a coworker something important. 1-to-1 presentations work so well on a netbook and when you're done, you can open your order forms and close some deals. When traveling, they are convenient and easy to use in airports, on planes, or in trains and cars, in hotel rooms, out by the pool (remember to include your drinks on your expense report), and darn near anywhere. If your clients like what they see, give them info on a usb drive and you're good to go. Bosses - You're going to write them off as an expense anyway, get one for yourself, too.

Netbook Programs and Applications
Although most netbooks come with Microsoft Windows XP, it doesn't necessarily come with MS Office and so you'll be missing the utilities you commonly use.The solution? OpenOffice. OpenOffice's productivity suite includes features similar to what Microsoft Office offers, including word processing, spreadsheets, slideshows, drawing and more. They have extensive templates, clip-art and all of the other features you'd get with MS Office. And, it's free.
Just go to OpenOffice.org and download OpenOffice.

- This looks like very helpful information. One point I'd like to correct, though. The Netbook Features section mentions "Hard Drive Memory". A hard drive is NOT memory. RAM is memory. A hard drive is Storage Capacity. Calling the Hard Drive "memory" is a mis-application of terminology and confusing to those who aren't tech-savvy.
