I have a Toshiba NB205 but it recently died and won't boot up. A guy at work suspects the motherboard. Has anyone else with that one had issues? I purchased it used but have probably had it less than 2 years (don't recall exactly when I purchased it).
  • JHFSEO May 13, 2012 @ 8:32 am | delete
I have seen others make that suggestion (new motherboard) based on the forums, although the computers were booting to some degree. Where is it stopping? Is it starting the boot at all?

Google: nb205 motherboard issue, check the forums and see if that gives you any more info.

Used/refurbished machines are always a crap shoot, and maybe you just got a bad one.

    Good luck.

Like the lens & information; however, the Samsung link is broken. IMHO, I would never buy a HP anything, other than a printer. Printers are their specialty, not laptops or notebooks. Years ago when they decided to get into computers, I was managing a large retail chain. HP computers came back 85% of the time and I don't think, again IMHO, that they have improved that much in that area over the years. Well done lens anyway! Lensrolled to my gaming laptop lens.

    Mahalo Nui, KonaGirl

Fixed the Samsung link, thanks for finding it.

You can see how little info I have for HPs, and I tend to agree, but my wife bought a HP Pavillion DM1 (review pending) and loves it, but I hear your voice of experience.

Thanks for visiting and the lensroll, will check out your gaming laptops!

Great web page - thanks, but would not recommend Asus (have 3 laptops, 3 netbooks).Bought 3 Asus Eee PC - the last two 15 months ago Model 1000HE paid $800 each. One used 4 days per week - touch pad rubbish. One has been used rarely, the other every day - the keys are falling off it and it is not booting - just out of the warranty of course. Sent one laptop to Asus under warranty - dreadful service took more than 2 months to fix it - no backup service. Won't buy Asus again
  • JHFSEO Nov 5, 2010 @ 2:31 pm | delete
Thanks for stopping by. Sorry to hear you've had such problems with ASUS - first I've heard. Fortunately, there's a great selection out there. I've loved my Toshiba, and am looking for a NB-305.

For those who fly overseas, that battery time can be the deal maker. A day before a trans-Atlantic flight, I purchased the Toshiba NB305 for $50 more than an Asus. Both were the newer Pine Trail chipset, but the Toshiba was rated for about two more hours.

Otherwise, I would agree with Austin. Ideally I'd like the longer battery time but lighter unit, even if it was smaller than 10 inches. I borrowed a friend's Acer 8.9 inch netbook, and it was fine. All I need is type and Skype!
  • JHFSEO Jul 5, 2010 @ 6:14 pm | delete
The Toshibas are monsters when it comes to battery life, so I hope you enjoy it for a long time to come.

Weight is definitely a factor, although as I said before they are similar. Duly noted though - I will do an update comparing netbook weights.
  • Austin May 3, 2010 @ 2:48 pm | delete
I think what you missed in your rating and comparison is size & weight. Surely this is the key for a netbook (as oppose to notebook).

Manufacturers are making a mistake going for larger sizes and larger battery for the sake of battery life. I doubt many people are away from power source for more than a few hours (9/10 hours might be useful if you are going camping every day !?)

Anyway, for me the size & weight is the key, I have a desktop and a laptop, why would i buy a big netbook !!!? I have Asus Eee PC 701 4G when it first came out. The only other netbook that has the same size and weight but with more advance feature is Asus Eee 901. (in fact all other netbooks more or less have the same level of features but bigger.)

I also like SSD as oppose to motorized drive, it has many advantages, save power, lighter and relisient to shock and damage in transport - that is why people by netbook , it's mobility.

Finally, price is the key, did you know standard travel insurance only pays a few hundred pounds (dollars) for a single item !!?
  • JHFSEO Jun 5, 2010 @ 12:01 am | delete
    Austin,

The only reason I didn't bring up weight, is that they are all very comparable, but then that's true with a lot of the netbook stats.

Interesting you brought up travel insurance. http://www.travelinsuranceonlineguru.com/ seems to provide for quite a bit of personal item coverage, but then you only need a free hundred dollars to compensate for a lost netbook.
  • JHFSEO Jun 5, 2010 @ 12:10 am | delete
    Austin,

Admittedly, I omitted weight info because they are all quite similar, as is true of most netbook stats.

Interesting that you brought up travel insurance. http://www.travelinsuranceonlineguru seems to offer more than enough insurance for personal items, but then it only takes a few hundred dollars to replace a netbook anyway.

I usually love Lenovo Thinkpads, but my friend has the Lenovo Ideapad netbook (the white one), and it is constantly feezing and locking up to the point where you can't do simple stuff like websurfing. I think most netbooks can do little more than a smartphone.

I have an early EeePC 701, have been using it for well over a year. This was the only choice when I got it. It has had a variety of Linux versions, the latest being Mint. The version it came with was fine, but I like to play. The Linus was a selling point for me. Guess this has been my experimental toy. It fits in my purse and goes everywhere. I am looking to replace it soon with something a little more polished, but this one has been a trouper. I'd say a good buy.

hi! great lens! ...can most of these netbooks hook up to an LCD projector? do most of them have the video out? do they have a firewire for faster external drive transference? i'm a Mac grrl so even thinking about getting a netbook makes me feel naughty! but traveling and presenting at conferences would be so much easier with a lighter machine! cheers!
  • JHFSEO Dec 18, 2009 @ 10:49 am | delete
On LCD Projectors...it depends on the projector. Many portable projectors today have USB connections, so yes. I can't think of a model that does not have a VGA port. Finally, I have introduced the Lenovo series of netbooks to this page to solve your firewire issue. The models that offer firewire do so with an expresscard that fits some models (I'll have to check on that for other models). Mac-heads seem to be suggesting the Lenovo S10 or S10e for firewire compatibility, which is discontinued (but still available) and replaced by the S10-2 (NOT COMPATIBLE). Good luck with those models, and don't worry, I'll keep your secret.

    can you play cd's
  • JHFSEO Dec 12, 2009 @ 9:50 am | delete
Netbooks sacrifice a cd drive for their tiny size. You CAN plug a CD drive into a USB port and run cds and dvds that way.

This looks like very helpful information. One point I'd like to correct, though. The Netbook Features section mentions "Hard Drive Memory". A hard drive is NOT memory. RAM is memory. A hard drive is Storage Capacity. Calling the Hard Drive "memory" is a mis-application of terminology and confusing to those who aren't tech-savvy.
