Netbooks, the future of computing

Ranked #10,637 in Computers & Electronics, #223,530 overall

So, what exactly is a netbook?

Remember when computers were called mainframes and were the size of small warehouses? OK you're too young, but trust me, they used to be so big it would take you 5 minutes to jog round them. Then along came the silicon chip and hey presto! computers shrank overnight, became called PC's and you could comfortably fit them into your office or bedroom. But they were still bulky, and had three separate parts, the monitor, the keyboard and the processing unit.
Fast forward a few years and along came laptops, everything combined into one unit, and small enough to fit on, well, your lap. Progress, progress, and now the next stage has been reached - netbooks. A netbook is basically a shrunk laptop - a fully functional working computer that you can fit inside a handbag. But surely they're expensive? Oh no. no. no. NO. THEY'RE FAR CHEAPER THAN LAPTOPS.

Why are they so cheap?

To achieve their small size, low weight and low price, netbooks offer fewer features. So there is less processing power, less memory, and reduced ability to run resource-intensive systems. BUT most of don't need multi gigabytes of processing power and memory. The vast majority of us use only a small fraction of the ability and functions of our laptops and PC's - so why pay for for this phenomenal power?
Why not get a computer with just enough fuctions and power for us to access our Email, store photos, write letters, surf the net, without all the fancy trimmings. Enter the netbook!
Analysts predict 2009 will prove to be the year when netbooks take off as a mainstream product - if they're cheap enough - and some of them are going to be very cheap - then, they predict, the public will flock to them in droves.
