Netley
Netley is in the County of Hampshire, in England
It's a small village to the east of Southampton. It lies along the coast facing the river Itchen. It has seen many great ships go past it's shores. These include Titanic, The Queen Mary, The QE2 to name a few.
Alongside the grand cruise ships you will see the Isle Of Wight ferry, cargo ships, yachts, tugs, and the occasional speed boat go on their journeys along the Itchen to and from the waters of the Solent.
Netley is a sleepy little place with a wealth of history. Ancient ruins, wonderful walks and delightful views all go to make Netley a gem on the south coast.
Please note. All of the photographs in this lens have been taken by myself or Poddys. They may not be copied or used in anyway with out our permission.. Thank you.
Royal Victoria Country Park
Nowadays, the grounds of the country park are frequented by families on picnics, dog walkers, children flying kites, people sun bathing, the odd ad hoc cricket match, various summer fetes and shows as well as open air concerts on summer evenings.
There's a tea room as well as an ice cream van if you should need refreshment. There's a minature steam railway and a couple of small fairground rides to entertain the children.
In the center of the park, is the remains of the old Royal Victoria Military Hospital also known as Netley Hospital which was built after the Crimean War. The hospital is where thousands of casualties were taken to be treated after being injured in wars until WW11.
Away from the center of the park is a nice stretch of woodland. I like to take a stroll through here away from the hustle and bustle of a busy day. If you follow the pathway through, you eventually come to the military war graves situated in the cemetery. There are graves of local people who worked at the hospital as well as the many, many servicemen from all over the world. The graves are maintained by The War Graves Commission.
It's rumoured that Florence Nightingale spent time nursing at the hospital but all I can find on the net is that some of the Matrons she trained worked there. Of course, I could be wrong.
There are also football pitches, car parks and bar-b-que areas too. many benches face out towards the water where you can sit and watch the activity on the river.
The shores on the other side of the river are of Fawley and you can see the chimneys of the power station and the famous 'Fawley Flame'.

There was once a pier that streched out into the river to receive the boats that carried casualties to the hospital. They would then be transported along the gravel path up to the doors and safety of the hospital.
This is all that remains of the original hospital buildings.
I believe there is a visitor center inside but there has been building work taking place on my last few visits so I haven't been inside.

This was taken in front of the hospital building, looking towards the river Itchen and in the far distance you can see the shores of Fawley.
Netley Shore
As you can see, the beach is made up of pebbles and stones. The water isn't ideal for swimming in. The many vessels that sail the river cause some pollution. A couple of miles up the road is a sewage plant. I remember as a young teenager swimming in the water to see something quite disgusting go floating past but I think things have improved since then!
This view is with the Country park to the left, and the views south towards the Solent and The Isle Of Wight.
If you walk further along the beach, you will reach Hamble.
St. Edwards Church

This is the parish church, St. Edwards situated on Grange road in Netley Abbey.
St. Edwards Parish Church

These houses are original Fishermens cottages situated in Victoria Road Netley Abbey.
They face out towards the river Itchen. A little further along the road you can find a few loacl shops, pub and take aways.

- I've never been to Netley, but enjoyed learning more about it. I loved your recollection of swimming there as a teenager. Beautiful photos, as always!
