Generating Your Own Leads or Purchasing Leads - Confused?

Purchasing leads can sound like a great idea if you have been struggling with the "old school" marketing strategies of hounding friends an family, or hanging out at the malls in hopes of finding good prospects. The idea of calling people who have already expressed an interest in starting a home based business or expressed interest in your type of product or service sounds a lot better than presenting your opportunity or product to any live body - and it is. However, there are also a lot of reasons why learning how to generate your own leads makes better sense. But how do you get started and how do you get your business off and running when you are still learning how to generate leads?

The Old School Methods

Why Purchasing Leads or Generating Your Own are More Effective

When I first started in network marketing in 2001, I was told to make a list of 100 people I knew to contact about my opportunity, and a variety of other methods to market my new business that were ineffective for me. Now, letting the people you know what you are doing is important. You don't want Aunt Suzy joining your company with someone else because she has no idea you are in the business. Friends and family can often be your best cheerleaders and you can gain referrals from them - if you don't run the off by bugging them to join your opportunity!

The problem with presenting your opportunity to friends and family is that unless you are fortunate enough to have a lot of entrepreneurial people in your circle of influence, people will often respond like this: "Sounds interesting Jane, BUT, I think I'll wait to see how you do. If you start doing well, then I'll think about joining."

Some people are fortunate enough to have the right environment, personality, to make this work. But often, even if they reach a certain level of success in these "old school" methods, they either "plateau" or their downline are not effective and they are unable to help.

The interesting thing is, when you don't RELY on your warm market and circle of influence, but simply inform them of what you are doing, get on with business and leave them alone - you and your business often become more attractive to them.

Purchasing Leads

The Pros and Cons of Purchased Leads

Now compared to hounding friends and family, purchasing leads makes sense to a lot of people. The idea is you are contacting people who have expressed an interest in either starting a home business or the type of product/service you are marketing. This is a lot better than the "old school" philosophy of everyone being your customer.

The problem lies in the lead quality and how the leads are generated. Often people simply opt in to the list because they figure, "Hey, making money at home sounds pretty good!" In other words, they come across an ad, while searching for something else on the internet and decide to opt-in.

Of course that is if you have found a reliable lead source. Often what you think you are getting in lead qualiity is not what you receive. You may end up calling people who requested information months ago and are no longer interested. Or they simply wanted to win a contest, so filled out the form.

Even when you do have a decent quality lead source, you need to make a lot of dials and develop superior phone skills. You have about 14 seconds to let the person know you are not a telemarketer and you are getting back to them to help them with what they had requested.

Now the good thing about making calls to purchased leads is that when you are making 50-100 dials a week, you start to develop good phone skills - at least if you get past the intial connection. But you just won't get the positive response from purchased leads that you can get from leads you generate yourself.

Generating Your Own Leads

Attracting People to You

When you learn how to attract people to you, and generate your own leads, your phone skills do not need to be at the level they need to be with purchased leads. Now certainly the skills you learned if you used purchased leads will not be wasted, and having good communication skills will increase your results in connecting with people, but when you attract people to you, the are actively searching for what you have to offer and they connect with you before you even talk.

If you use an autoresponder and opt-in form, like Oprius or something similar, they will start recieving emails from you immediately after requesting information from you. You want to make your emails educational and of value to your potential customer or business partner so they start to build the relationship.

When you generate your own leads, you will actually have people who know who you are when you call and are glad to hear from you! Of course, not always, but you'll be surprised how often it does happen. You will even have some people seek you out and call you. That will never happen with a purchased lead.

Generating leads does take some time to learn and to get your marketing in place, but it is well worth the effort. Some people will even purchase some leads while they are getting their marketing in place. This can be helpful in developing communication skills. If you decide to go that route, make sure you have a quality lead source and stay within your budget.

Learning to generate your own leads is not difficult, but it does take time and you need to be willing to learn how. I have found Ann Sieg's Renegade Network Marketer ebook and Renegade University a powerful combination in helping people to learn how to generate their own leads.
