Network marketers are guilty of this everyday. To paraphrase, sentimentality is not letting go of something that's not working. It applies to your marketing strategies and also to your down line.
In other words, hanging on to a strategy you have been using which is consuming too much of your time or letting go of someone in your down line who simply is not doing anything to help themselves.
A work at home business requires getting out of your comfort zone and testing new strategies until you find those that work and dismiss those that don't.
When it comes to a non productive down line member, use the analogy of three strikes and you're out. Over the course of a couple of weeks, provide them with some initial help by way of tasks but if you get the dreaded excuse each time they don't meet their time line simply let them know your time is valuable and you have others you need to get with to train.
Then let them go. When we say let them go, they need to be contacting you for help instead of you continually doing the chasing. It's unproductive and will hamper your efforts to move forward.
While this may sound harsh the reality is, while an unproductive down line may mean well, the truth is, they can suck your time and energy which will be better directed to those willing to move forward.
It's definitely the 80/20 rule at play here because 20% or less will be producing most of your volume.
You've got to understand that many people in a work at home business such as network marketing may just be happy to get the products at cost or simply want to belong to something. That's a fact.
So don't dismiss them from your correspondence lists by any means but just be wary of where you are directing your productive time.
While someone may be close to you such as a relative or friend and you feel obligated to devote some extra time with them, if they are not reciprocating your efforts simply move on and find what is working.
Some hard decisions need to be made but if you don't make them your progress will be hampered significantly.

So what was wrong with this scenario? Plenty! It was obvious the prospect's only motivation was to try and get me to take a look at his business opportunity and the only way he knew how to get through to me was by ramming it down my mouthpiece.
Seriously, I got about three words in and they were to the effect of hmmm...hmmm...hmmm. He'd lost me after 30 seconds.
The sad part is, this is generally the way most networkers behave. What made it worse is I let him know I was already working a successful business but it didn't deter his mission to try and convert me over.
That was a classic case of a desperate marketer with no idea on what it takes to firstly, convince the prospect that he was genuinely concerned about my goals and aspirations and secondly, he gave me no valuable advice or resources that I could take away and use.
What made this a joke was that he was supposed to be the prospect, not me yet as a hardened network marketer, it's the type of stuff you get used to.
If you take anything away from this article it's this...unless you're using attraction marketing in your network marketing business whether it's online or offline, you simply will continue to struggle to bring long lasting business builders into your organization. It's as simple as that.

I want to share a story about how powerful pre-selling is but it doesn't revolve around network marketing. It actually revolves around a man and a cat.

Having moved into a new home several months ago it wasn't long before we had a strange visitor suddenly show up in the shape of a cat.

Sure enough, he started to eat the food and when he emptied his bowl, I would leave more for him. But he still wasn't interested in getting close to me.
Hmmm...I then wondered whether I should put the food out there more sparingly. No, what I decided to do was try and coax him towards me with it.
So for several days I would feed him bits and pieces, just enough for him to get more interested.
What was actually happening was he gradually saw me as someone who could fill a need in his life - easy meals and before long, he was actually sitting on my back doorstep looking through our screen door to see where I was.
TJ was beginning to trust me and as each day went by, he would get closer and closer to me when I went outside with his food.
It was only a couple of weeks ago when I made the big breakthrough. Standing outside and holding out a piece of chicken while calling him over, TJ actually was brave enough to approach me ever so slowly and take the food from my fingertips.
As he was eating it, I even managed to pat him on the head a couple of times and he seemed to enjoy it.
It took a couple of months but my point is, by providing TJ with value (the food) as a total stranger from the beginning, I actually pre-sold him on the idea I was someone he could rely on and that comes down to earning his trust.
Yes, I didn't know it at the time but I was getting a strong lesson in preselling. It's what you do in the lead up to your sales pitch which matters.
Provide your new prospects with value from the beginning and it won't matter how good your sales pitch is - they will eventually want to join you. That's the power of preselling.

Thirdly, set yourself mini rewards and a main reward during the day. Work in time blocks and when you've completed each task, give yourself a small reward. This can be whatever you like but just as long as it doesn't distract you from your next task.
The main reward at the end of the day could be time out to go to the beach for a surf, down to your local cafe for a latte or simply sitting down and watching a favorite movie. It's your choice.
