I Needed To Improve My Business Social Networking
When a person gets out of the house everyday to go to a job, or, talk with people, it seems to me that your creative juices are flowing and you are involved in positive networking. Like many of us who work from home, this is difficult because we are basically isolated from the world. My day consists of working, creating and talking on the computer. When you get out and see people everyday, you get positive strokes from those you come into contact with and you go to the next meeting feeling pretty good about yourself. When you work on the computer one must convey what they are doing in writing and sometimes the people you are talking to don't get back with you for hours. That positive stroke still gives you a good "pumped up" fleeting feeling, but really, you have already moved on to the next idea and it does not have the same impact as a "LIVE" atta boy.
I started an ecommerce mail order business in 1998 after retiring from my first career. I didn't have a lot of friends from my first career and prided myself to having a few "quality" friends...whatever that means. I have never been really good at having a lot of friends. I've made a lot of acquaintances in my lifetime, but never developed them into long term relationships.
I used to be very entertaining/funny....according to me anyway. It seems as I have gotten older I say some things that are considered politically incorrect...even though I have always thought I was a sensitive and caring person. See what isolation does to you? I've made a lot of fatal business decisions over the years and I never wanted anyone to know that I was a failure. I have had a horrible fear of failing my entire life and when it has happened to me, it was devastating. I guess I would say that this is probably one reason I don't open myself up to others more. But this is another lens topic...
When I was young and attended business functions there was always the stay at home mom with small children attending with their spouse who probably felt the same as I do now. That stay at home mom is now probably a fireball in the corporate world while I sit isolated at my computer trying to grow my business talking in abbreviations and smiley faces.
You know it is bad when your only human contact during the day is when you attempt to corner your mail carrier that you see running up to your front porch and who continues to inch backward as you talk trying to get back to their truck. I often wonder if they are on a time schedule...? Or, when you do get to talk with someone, most likely on the phone, your side of the conversation involves a discussion about the guests on the Dr. Phil Show and Dr. Phil Speak, or, Oprah's events of the day.
A couple of years ago, I had to sell my warehouse full of inventory due to illness. I couldn't keep up with the business. Business was good. I belonged to several networking groups in my city. I had walk-in wholesale customers, I participated in the Home Shows and I regularly went on sales calls. Sales on our website and eBay were decent. Then everything stopped.
Now, a couple of years later, my health is better.
To solve the problem of my isolation and inability to network naturally, I have joined several online communities. First I tried MySpace, then I learned about Blogging, facebook, Twitter and recently opened an account with Merchant Circle. You can read below about how each of these venues helped me get the benefits of social networking without leaving my chair.
How do I get my business started again, or, bring in more clients?
Everyone keeps telling me that Social Networking is the new way to promote your business. They tout that it is effective in bringing in new clients if done correctly. So, I decided to try their suggestions. I have to tell you that I am new to all of this and I do not have a gauge if it really has been effective for me or not.
I have been putting in the effort to social network and I guess I will have to wait to see if I can attract new customers. So far, I don't think my efforts have produced results. Maybe you can help me and tell what I am doing wrong.
I have been on MySpace for about two years. The rest of the sites I have listed in this lens are new to me as of this year. I hope you will share your experiences in the comment section and add your links so we can all network together!
MySpace
My first attempt in social networking was on MySpace. Everyone I knew from eBay was going to MySpace to promote their business.I don't think MySpace knew what to do when all of these eBay sellers showed up on their site. Some users intially complained of getting their MySpace profiles deleted for advertising their auctions. Slowly, top eBay execs started showing up on MySpace and we no longer heard about eBay sellers getting their profiles deleted.
I have a lot of fun on MySpace and have met some nice people. Lots of bands and musicians. Most of my friends are eBay sellers, eCrater store owners and BluJay store owners. I then started spreading out to other groups who would be interested in my products, or, that had interests similar to mine. I started writing blogs to share my knowledge regarding Feng Shui.
If you don't keep in contact on a regular basis with many of your "friends" on MySpace, they will delete you. If you advertise your business or a special sale you are having, some of your friends will delete you. If you post a bulletin that not all of your friends are interested in, your friends who are not interested will delete you. It is a fine line to toe in making friends and turn them into customers on MySpace. A lot of members there have their own causes they are promoting and are only interested in recruiting you into their cause. A lot of people are just looking for friends to socialize with.
I write blogs to share my knowledge. I don't consider myself an expert in everything that I write, but, I do write informative articles so that someone who is reading it, can follow links to additional articles to figure out what they want to know. Some of my "friends" on MySpace will ask me for detailed information regarding their situation and want me to send them a packet written specifically for them because they are too busy running their business to read everything I have written. When I tell them there will be a charge to do that, I never hear from them again.
One thing that I find difficult to do on MySpace is send messages to your friends. Because there has been so much spam and porn on the site, most members have their security settings set so high that when you try to send a message you have to type a code for each message you are trying to send. This becomes very time consuming.
I can honestly say that I do not believe I have ever received a sale from one of my "friends" on MySpace. I have received an average of 8 to 10 lookers to my website and eBay store each month from MySpace. Yet, in a couple of groups I belong to on eBay some successful sellers will talk/post about how MySpace brings them buyers on a consistent basis. They will talk about how someone who happened upon their profile turned into a buyer on their website. They make it sound so easy.
What am I doing wrong? How do I turn those lookers into buyers?
Part of the problem that I see is that I have never really connected with a group. A group to interact with on a daily basis. I am pretty much a solo business owner doing my own thing. And, if you are a business owner, you know how much time it takes to run a business.
I have attended several eBay LIVEs. I attended to go the classes, get business advice from the booths and pick up a tremendous amount of freebies. But, I never really socialized with other sellers... eBay sellers are a large network and a lot of sellers seem to know each other, eBay developers, eBay employees, eBay service providers, etc. These are the sellers you will see that continue to be successful on eBay and MySpace works as a wonderful marketing tool for them.
Please add your MySpace link below if you are interested in networking and promoting your business with other business owners.

Want to Network on Facebook with me?
Earlier this year I was introduced to facebook. It took me several months before my profile was up and running because at first, facebook looked like it was going to be difficult to learn.I have to tell you, I LOVE FACEBOOK! There is not enough space in this module to tell you all the GREAT things about facebook and the networking capabilities on that site!
You are able to promote BigCrumbs on your profile. I also have widgets from my ShopIt store, Twitter, Stumble Upon, a Social Calendar and more!
This site really allows its members to promote themselves, their businesses and play interactive games. It is easier to stay in touch with your friends because they have so many comment applications that you can send something to everyone on your list everyday if you wanted.
I have not learned everything there is to know about facebook yet, but, I can tell you, I am hooked. I am playing games in my free time and conversing with my friends while I do.
One problem I see with facebook is all the invitations for new applications you receive everyday from your network. I can't play every game, or add every comment/cause application to my profile. How do you choose which ones to add? This can be overwhelming.
I highly recommend facebook to promote your business. You can work and have fun at the same time! I have not received any spam or porn so far on facebook. I have not made any sales from my network on facebook, but, I have gained a few followers on Twitter.
Please add your link below so we can network together on facebook!

Blogging...
There are many websites that offer blogs. I happen to use the Google site called Blogger. I was mainly blogging on MySpace and eBay before I finally took the plunge to create a separate site for just writing a blog. Many of my acquaintences claim that you need to blog to promote your business. If you are not blogging, you are missing out on a great opportunity.
There have been many articles written on blogging, so, I am not going to be repetitive here. But, I will suggest that you take the time to write a blog about you, your business, what you know, etc. etc. The topics are endless. It does not have to be long or in-depth.
I think the key to creating a good blog with a following are the keywords used for search that you will usually add at the bottom of the blog. Be sure to use keywords that describe your blog, but also, take a step back and think about what a person would search for if they were looking to read your blog about your subject.

Do you TWEET?
Follow your friends and business contacts on Twitter
Truthfully, I was very skeptical about Twitter. I heard that many have received spam and porn from joining Twitter. This year a group I belong to encouraged everyone to join to promote your business with a personal touch. So, I stuck my toe in the water. It was painless. I did receive a couple of porn offers but deleted them from "following" me right away. Since then, 13 people have added me to follow and I have added 40 more people that I am following.
It is a quick and easy way for someone to type in what they are doing at the time, show a special sale you are having, gripe or complain, give atta boys, announce new products, etc.
I browsed the help section and it shows that they have been making an effort to close coding glitches to eliminate spam. Their blog is concise, to the point, information to let you know what is going on at Twitter. They don't have a lot of fluff.
I started wondering who really uses Twitter? So, I clicked on a couple of people that I follow to look closely at their profile page and view their followers. I was amazed! Most of the people I checked had over 2000 followers! And, what I saw was mostly professional people. I don't know why I didn't join sooner.
Major companies have employees monitoring what is being said on Twitter to handle customer service better.
When you "follow" someone, that person receives an email letting them know that a new person is following them. A lot of people will reciprocate and follow that person back. You don't have to, but it is a polite thing to do. I hope I can be an interesting person that people will want to follow to see what I am doing throughout the day and decide to follow me.
Be sure to add your Twitter link below so we can follow you!

"How does your business social network?"
Merchant Circle
Promote your business locally
I discovered Merchant Circle this year as a way to promote your business in your local area. It allows you to network with other local business owners, create coupons, blog, send out newsletters, participate in forums, add a chat box to your website and much, much more!It provides a map to your business if you allow customers to visit your business. It gives you stats on how many visitors you have had and how many times the search engines are crawling your site.
I highly recommend this site. They provide a lot of FREE services that you would pay anywhere else to advertise your company. I have connected with several local businesses in the short time I have had a website on Merchant Circle.
Please add your Merchant Circle website link below so we can join you!

Social Networking
Conclusion
As you can see, even people who are homebound and may go weeks without seeing many people face to face can have a quite extensive network of online acquaintances, and most of it costs you nothing but the time you choose to invest in self-promotion and getting to know other networkers. Social networking is available to even the most introverted and isolated among us. Give it a try and see how many new friends you will make.DISCLAIMER: Always use appropriate precautions and be aware of your personal safety when dealing with strangers on the internet. Never give passwords, bank or credit card information, or personal information unless you know who is receiving the information. Read more about online safety here:
