State of Nevada: Land of Adventure

There's more to Nevada than just Las Vegas. There are mountains to climb and valleys to explore; you can dive in Lake Tahoe or go rafting down Truckee River; you can play golf or go bird watching. There are even places for skiing and snowboarding during the winter.

And that's just a handful of the many things you can do in the Silver State! If you want to have an adventure, you'll find it in Nevada.

Hiking and Climbing in Nevada

Hiking Trails in Nevada

Nevada's rugged beauty and mountainous areas make it ideal for hiking, exploring, and climbing. Regardless of your skill level, Nevada has something for everyone.

If you're a climber, southern Nevada is the place to be. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area has areas filled with red limestone rock that is excellent for testing your climbing abilities. It's less than an hour's drive away from Las Vegas, and you can also take climbing lessons here.

Las Vegas' Mount Charleston and Reno's Lake Tahoe are both extremely popular hiking destinations. If you hate crowds and prefer the paths less followed, you may prefer trails in Toiyabe Range or the Success Summit Loop.

Nevada Winter Sports

Nevada Skiing

"Skiing" and "winter sports" are usually not the first words that come to mind when most people think of Nevada. Though the state is mostly desert land, there's a good reason why its Spanish name means snow-covered.

Lake Tahoe is home to most of Nevada's ski resorts. One of the most popular ones here is Heavenly Mountain Resort, located on the southern shore. It has the highest elevation of all the Lake Tahoe resorts. Other great ski resorts at Lake Tahoe include Squaw Valley, Kirkwood Mountain, and Diamond Peak.

If you plan on spending most of your time in southern Nevada, consider a skiing trip to Mount Charleston. It may not be as popular as most of the Lake Tahoe ski resorts, but it has its own beautiful scenery, and it's conveniently located near Las Vegas.

Don't think you're just limited to skiing! You can also go snowshoeing, snowboarding, or sledding at many of these resorts. You could even drive a snowmobile.

Nevada Water Sports

Nevada Canoing, Kayaking, Rafting, & Scuba Diving

If you love canoing, scuba diving, or doing other water sports, you'll probably want to spend the bulk of your time in Lake Tahoe. You can even do jet skiing here. And if you ever get tired of splashing in the water, there are plenty of other things you can do in the Tahoe area.

If you want even more excitement, try whitewater rafting or kayaking on the Truckee River. The Truckee River Whitewater Park is open all year round and welcomes beginners.
