Nevada's Wild Horses

Symbols of the Wild, Wild West

One of the most amazing things about living in Nevada is driving past a band of mustangs each morning on the way to work. If the traffic is light, I can look over and watch them living out their life ... probably trying to ignore I80 on the other side of the Truckee River.

One of the saddest things about living in Nevada is driving by the pens where they keep the mustangs after they've been rounded up. There can't be a life more dull than being penned up in a dusty, barren field after roaming through sage country. And, of course, it is doubly sad knowing that chances are great that some horses actually died at the hands of the BLM contractors while they were being rounded up. The pens might be dismal, but they are the end results of likely brutal roundups that sane ranchers wouldn't subject their own livestock too because they might kill the profits.

This year the plight of the mustangs of North America is taking center stage in Nevada! Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you find resources at this lens to help join the cause of saving the mustangs!

Madeleine Pickens speaks about the BLM

Madeleine Pickens is hugely involved in saving the American mustang, and describes in this video the eco-sanctuary that she is working to create in Nevada. This place is ready to accept wild horses, and activists like me have written politicians and the BLM supporting the eco-sanctuary. I got back email form letters back thanking me for our interest, likely generated by a robot and not a human being.

Madeleine Pickens is on Jane Velez Mitchell 1/31/11

This news story regarding the cruel round-up shares some of the facts and figures of the monetary cost of animal cruelty at the hands of the Federal Government. I suppose it isn't a high priority to President Obama ... saving money. It is so sad! The means to care for these horses in a way that costs less money and is more humane is available and our government is disregarding the option and opting for animal cruelty instead.

The Cloud Foundation

The Cloud Foundation is one of the organizations that works to protect mustangs here in the US. They tend to bring to light the realities of the treatment of mustangs under the watchful eye of the Bureau of Land Management ... and, of course, the BLM tends to come out with a finding that they in fact did nothing wrong. But, the Cloud Foundation releases videos on YouTube. Check out a few so that you can judge for yourself the usefulness of the BLM's Wild Horse and Burro programs.

Below is an RSS feed featuring the latest press release from The Cloud Foundation. Below that are a few videos worth watching.

How the BLM Operates Round-Ups

Your Tax Dollars Used for Animal Cruelty

Despite the prospect of an eco-sanctuary that would save our government money, in January 2011 the Bureau of Land Management continues to round-up mustangs here in Nevada. These two videos show the cruel tactics used by our government using a helicopter to chase the wild horses around through dangerous terrain past the point of exhaustion. This video captured by The Cloud Foundation.

Here is more information regarding Alan Shepard that heads up the project dealing with mustangs and burros here in Nevada, and suggestions on how to suggest to the powers that be replace this man.

How the BLM Takes Care of Wild Horses in Captivity

Your Tax Dollar Supporting Animal Cruelty

In March 2011, Lisa Friday with The Cloud Foundation visited the Butterfield Short-Term Wild Horse and Burro Holding Facility located outside Salt Lake City, Utah. While watching this video, remember that it costs the American tax payer tens of millions of dollars each year to maintain wild horses in these conditions. Also consider that most Federal employees make more money than their counterparts in the private sector. People had a good job keeping horses in these conditions.

How To Take Action

Contacting Your Politicians

The "Action Alert" section of the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign website keeps followers abreast of ways they can contact their politicians with regards to helping wild horses on BLM land. A great many of the "action alerts" work to stop round-ups in favor of more humane alternatives, and the site will help you send a letter to the correct politicians.

Wild Mustangs vs. Wildlife

The United States Fish & Wildlife Service offers an on-line digital library. Most of their images come from National Park Service photography. In late 2008 I tried to search for images of mustangs to spice up this lens.

No go!

Not a single image of wild horses wandering around the wild, wild West.

That can't possibly be because there are no mustangs wandering around in National Parks. After all, mustangs don't know where BLM land ends and NPS land begins.

It got me wondering if USFWS employees just think of these lovely creatures as pests to be dealt with?

Equine Outreach - Horse Rescue

Warning - This video attached depicts the results of cruelty and neglect by humans that some horses have to live with. Sadly, you will realize when watching it that some horses don't live through their ordeals. But, the happy ending is that these horses were lucky enough to be rescued by Equine Outreach.

A lot of people have a romantic idea that wild horses are born free, but it isn't always the case. There are quite a few horses that are let loose, or lost by irresponsible owners. There are other horses that are abused and neglected by their owners that also need our help.

This video illustrates the problem horses owned by criminals face here in Nevada and throughout the western states. This video shows "Some of the intakes from 2009 from the day they stepped foot onto Equine Outreach soil and the journey back to health. Equine Outreach is a volunteer run horse rescue in Bend, Oregon." Learn more at www.EquineOutreach.com.

This lens breaks my heart and makes me want to shake somebody. I've signed petitions and donated money but I would love to some day be a "hands on" activist for wild horses.
Thank you for writing such an informative lens so others can see and help to stop this inhumane treatment of our icon of freedom.

I sprinkled some stardust over the wild horses, you, and this lens. ***blessed*** Very much deserved for the voice and actions you are lending to this cause. I appreciate those who act on their convictions. May we all be willing to take a stand when it counts most.

Such an important lens. It turns my stomach... what our country is doing to the wild horses. I don't want anyone taking my two bands of wild horses. They make this land I share with them more than special and unique. They are the wild west that still exists in tiny pockets of this country. I plan to take action. Thanks for spurring me on! I congratulate you for bringing this plight to our attention.

Thanks for stopping in. I used to have a band of mustangs that lived in my valley that I'd see time to time down by the river. But right about the time our Harry Reid arranged a BLM land swap for someone that gave him a hefty campaign contribution they disappeared. Of course I'll never really know if they got rid of them then to put in their golf courses, etc... but probably.

The Argument Against Ranching

Welfare Ranching: The Subsidized Destruction Of The American West

Amazon Price: $39.98 (as of 02/15/2012)Buy Now

This year has really opened by eyes to ranching here in Nevada, and how our government loses money leasing land to ranchers. This book highlights even more problems with the ranching industry.
