Public Speaking: Course You Can! - part 1

by Steve Robinson

To stand up in front of a mass of people and talk is a prospect that so many of us would shy away from immediately. Unfortunately for many people, public speaking is a necessary part our job, our business, or even just from a social point of view. There is, however, help at hand in the form of a public speaking course that can guide you through all the tricks and techniques, and avoiding the pitfalls of speaking in public.

What to look for from a public speaking course.

There is a multitude of public speaking training courses available, but choosing the right one for you will depend on what you hope to achieve, your preferred learning method and of course the cost. Various things come into consideration, but generally you'll find in most courses the basic principles of public speaking, including:

  • Presentation skills for public speaking

  • Preparation and practice

  • Building confidence

  • Coping with nerves

  • Body language

A good public speaking course should expand on these sections though, and take a more in-depth look at various areas where people need further guidance.

Public Speaking: Course You Can! - part 2

Public speaking and stage presence.

In the outline of a public speaking course, you'll often see a mention of things like interacting with your audience, eye contact, building up a rapport and using gestures. Stage presence in public speaking is of course a major factor when you're observing the difference between a good speaker and a great one. Very few lucky people have a natural stage presence, but most of us need a bit of training with our public speaking. Course notes will only help us so far, but thankfully there are other ways of delivering training that will suit our individual preferences; audio books, video courses, interactive software and one to one coaching are just a few learning methods we can take advantage of.

Public speaking and thinking on your feet.

If you absolutely dread the thought of getting up in front of an audience without the benefit of a full set of notes, don't despair - you are not alone! Fear of public speaking is a huge problem for many people and giving a presentation on the spur of the moment would send most of us into a spin. This is where a public speaking course can really make a difference, and the very best versions will take you through the tips, tricks and techniques for making a speech at short notice. Thinking on your feet is not something that most of us are comfortable with when faced with a public speaking event, but learning the various methods of spontaneous speeches, answering questions and perhaps even dealing with a difficult audience can make a huge impact.

Choosing the right public speaking course.

A few things you could think about when you're considering the best public speaking course for you are:

  • The level of expertise you have and need - what does the course cover?

  • What are your specific weaknesses and does the course provide help for them?

  • What are your preferred learning methods?

  • How much after sales support does the course provide??

Finally, cost is always a factor in deciding which public speaking course you choose. While there are plenty of training courses available, finding one that gives you good value for money should help you make your mind up!

How to get the audience into your speech (part 1)

by Steve Robinson

There are so many ways that you can get your audiences into your speech, but you will want to make sure that it just doesn't seem like a one on one conversation. You need to allow them to get into the speech and participate. There are ways that you can ask the audience a question and see how many people will reply to your question. You will want to make sure that you start your speech by allowing them to know that it is okay for them to join in and give their opinion. You will want to make sure that you try to encourage everyone to join in on some part of the speech or discussion.

However, you don't just have to have them join in for the audience to be "in to" the speech. You will find that there are ways to get them interested and stay interested by simply delivering a great speech. You will find that if you visualize the audience as an individual and not a mass or group of people you will be able to get them involved. You don't want to just pay attention to just one person, but talk to them like you are talking to everyone singly. You won't to talk to them like you are paying attention to everyone's feelings in the room. Also, try to make it more personal.

How to get the audience into your speech (part 2)

by Steve Robinson

When you are thinking about taking a small group of people aside to give them a speech you will want to make sure that it is casual and personal. The best way to describe this is the knight's roundtable. When you group everyone in a circle, there is no leader. Everyone will feel equal and you'll feel like you are making the most out of your time together.

Also, you will want to be conscious of your audience's body language. If they look like they are falling asleep it is because they are. You will want to improvise and change your speech to match the needs of the audience. You will want to make sure that you do everything you can to make it happen. That means that when the audience is giving you a sign, you will have to learn to respond to them in a positive way.

Also, look at yourself. Make sure that what you are showing with your body language you are saying it in your speech as well. If you sound excited, look excited. It is your body language that will pull it all together. You will want to remember that, along with, other tips so that you can get your audience into your speech from beginning to end. You will find success as a speaker when you learn how to hold an audience's attention.

Public speaking and using humor (part 1)

by Steve Robinson

The whole point of public speaking is to give your audience something to take with them. Rather it be something of entertainment, something of persuasion, and even just some new and interesting facts. You will want your audience members to be able to say that they learned something or that they don't waste their time listening to you. You will find that it can be hard to break through and audience, but you will want to use your emotions to convince them that they are getting something out of the time that they are spending with you.

You will need to use different tools in working the system. One of the best tools to use is humor. Humor will allow you to change the mood of the room and it will also make everyone feel more comfortable. You will want to make sure that your humor is appropriate, but you will also want to learn when to use it in your speech or demonstration.

Everyone will find their own way of dealing with public speaking, but you will find that humor is the most widely used tool for speeches. You will find that humor will go along way when it comes to informing, persuading, or entertaining your audience. Just because you have something serious to say and something serious to get across doesn't mean that you have to be serious. You can use the humor to help everyone get comfortable.

Public speaking and using humor (part 2)

by Steve Robinson

Humor is something that is understood by the general population. Just make sure that you do everything you can to make the room feel more comfortable, however, you should think about the humor that you use. It is very important that your speech humor fits perfectly into the speech.

You may also find that you might want to use humility. This is where you try to open up with the audience. You will be able to bond with the audience by telling a funny story about yourself. There are a lot of ways to introduce humor into the speech, but you will find that the time will always feel right. You will want to make sure that all the stories are appropriate, but also that your personal shortcomings are something that you can add to a speech to make the whole group and room feel better.

You will want to make sure that you combine a little bit of humor and humility so that you can bond with the audience and really get their attention. You will find that there are a lot of things that you will be able to do to add humor in your speech. Just make sure that everything that you plan in your speech is tasteful and so that you can combine all of your knowledge and experience into a speech so that everyone can get some from it.
