Barb Tarbox kept teens from smoking

Ranked #4,050 in Healthy Living, #73,222 overall

Happy New Year Barb Tarbox!

We owe a great deal to a 42 year old woman in Canada who's life (cut short from smoking cigarettes), saved the lives of many and spared thousands from an early death.

This article was also inspired by fellow lensmasters Poutine and Dr. Chris Day (their inspiring lenses are featured in the right sidebar).

On December 30th, 2010 the federal government announced that it will update its cigarette packages with new warnings, including Barb Tarbox on her deathbed.

This was not accomplished without a fight. Health Canada apparently began to cave from pressure by the tobacco lobby, in the last few months. However, their decision made no sense; especially after the US government began using Tarbox's photos on their own new cigarette packages. Thank god for public outrage, though. Perhaps, some believe, the government only acted now because of the fierce public pressure.

Back to Barb, she went on a powerful anti-smoking crusade from October 2002 to May 18, 2003, when she died. Visiting schools and telling her life story about smoking. It definitely had a lasting effect on impressionable teens to never even try a cigarette. I still hear some of them mention how her raw honesty moved them to never start smoking. As I have mentioned in previous lenses, we cannot measure what we prevent, however, we owe a great deal to those who did prevent untimely deaths. Let us not forget Barb's selfless act - she is the hero here.

The photo of Barb on her deathbed is truly shocking and amazing, I am sure you will soon see it. (UPDATE: It is now shown at top, left). Journal photographer Greg Southam even expressed (in a telecast I caught on the late news a day ago) that it was hard to look at Barb in that state. He was quoted as saying (taken from The Edmonton Journal article by David Staples titled, "Today is Barb Tarbox Day in Canada" (Dec. 30, 2010) "Barb realized that some of the photos Greg had taken were going to be painful for any smoker to behold and she thought they might well be fitting to appear on smoke packages. I agreed, and promised her I'd do all I could to make that happen."

Amazing her name was Tarbox - a prophesy! She died a horrible way, and had the courage to help others to realize the dangers. A very commendable woman.
  • sousababy May 23, 2012 @ 1:13 am | delete
Yes, her name . . it sure does remind one of how she died. I think Barb did more to save lives by her heartfelt courage and passion than any anti-smoking campaign that was introduced (at least in my area of Canada).

An autopsy technician told me that when they open a 40-year old smoker, they find an 80-year old person inside.
  • sousababy May 15, 2012 @ 2:31 am | delete
Yes . . it's really a shame that folks were misled to believe that smoking is safe and not addictive. It shows up in virtually every organ and tissue in the body . . even our eyes.

Thank you so much, Barb saved thousands of lives (and continues to do so because of her bravery and ability to care more about others than herself).

Another great lens Rose and Squid Angel blessed!

By the way I quit smoking 15 years ago, yesterday 5/5/97, after more than 20 years! My advise if you smoke and struggle to quit (like I did) is: Never quit quitting.
  • sousababy May 6, 2012 @ 7:32 pm | delete
Great advice: Never quit quitting . . and congrats on your 15+ years smoke-free! Thank you also for blessing this lens, means more than you know. Warmly, Rose

Was here a year ago ad returning to marvel at Barb Tarbox's courage and the strength she mustered up to save lives. Most of us don't even want to go out with a cold. Leaving a bit of angel dust.
  • sousababy May 6, 2012 @ 7:35 pm | delete
Thank you Tipi, I hope this gives those who struggle (with anything, really) some courage . . action always get noticed. Barb is (was) definitely one of the most influential women in Canada, imo.

Such an important topic and lens. A dear family friend of mine was recently diagnosed with lung cancer, and smoking contributed to my grandmother's death several years ago. It is just a habit I wish more people truly understood the terrible health risks and dangers about.

Nice, Nice Work. I should quit smoking. I tell everyone else to quit for health reasons, yet I smoke myself. Is that hypocritical and stupid or what? Hopefully people who read this lens are much more intelligent than I and quit smoking. Belated Congrats on your purple star! :-)
