New Car Technology

GPS, Bluetooth, and More

Telematics Moving New Car Technology GPS navigation systems once were a rare but delightful treat for drivers, even though it was only a select few drivers who paid top dollar for it. But now, things have changed dramatically when it comes to new vehicle technology. No longer is GPS only reserved for buyers of premium brands. Now many different makes and models have GPS navigation as an option and even the new $16,000 Suzuki SX4 will have GPS standard!

Today, new cars are combining a variety of technology beyond just GPS. This combination of telecommunications and other computer technologies have combined to form telematics, the latest in vehicle technology.

Systems such as hands free cell phone systems and GPS are no longer stand alone items, they're integrated together. Although not all systems can boast complete integration, automakers are moving closer to seamless on board telematics.

Although advanced telematics systems will eventually be able to control everything from the CD player to the vehicle's security system, many automakers have already introduced systems that combine many different functions in one place.

General Motors has offered the OnStar system on vehicles throughout the various brands for years, and more recently at San Diego Corvette and other Chevrolet dealers buyers have been requesting that the system be in their new vehicles. This system combines turn by turn directions, roadside assistance, and various vehicle diagnostics.

Ford has also recently introduced Sync, an advanced telematics system in vehicles within the Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln brands. Developed with Microsoft, Sync powers music and onboard entertainment, cell phone connectivity and hands-free features, and the navigation system along with various other data. New car dealers like Ford Orange County are benefiting from the added corporate television and print spots promoting the new technology.

With Ford, Chevy, and other mainstream manufacturers offering vehicle telematics, advanced technology is no longer reserved for only expensive luxury vehicles.
