Combine Two Methods For Effective Leash Training

This picture shows Alvin's initial reaction to leash training. All of a sudden he decided to be as stubborn as hell. A caption for this picture:

If you rate the difficulty of leash training a puppy - Alvin's number is 11 on a scale of 1 to 10 where 10 is the highest difficulty.

When he finally started moving, he pulled much more than you would expect a 10 pound puppy could pull. I tried several different leash training methods. None worked 100 % until I combined them AND used a Gentle Leader.

The Gentle Leader is a collar the dog wears high on his neck along with a nose strap. The person walking the dog has better control than a normal collar. It helps minimize pulling.

How The New (Combo) Method Works
This lens explains two methods, one from Secrets To Dog Training, the dog and puppy training "bible," and the other from It's PAWSible! Dog Training and Puppy Training DVD.

Put the two methods together with the Gentle Leader, a few treats, and a leash and you're ready to train. It also helps to train initially with as few distractions as possible. If possible, leash train your puppy in the house. After a few successful training sessions, you can move outdoors.

Notes for Readers
This lens is the second of a set of two lenses on leash training a puppy. The first lens is called Leash Training Puppies - Preparation. If you haven't done so already, please read the preparation lens. It links to this lens in the section Check Out This Lens To Prepare For Leash Training.

Read the entire lens before you start leash training. The actual plan combining the two methods requires understanding the methods. For additional help, consult the resources I've mentioned in this section.

Leash Training A Puppy - Method 1

Wait To Reward A Desirable Behavior

Method I - Leash Training A Puppy is about looking for a behavior/action that you want and immediately rewarding it. These behaviors center around paying attention to the trainer.

This method is demonstrated by Beth Ostrowski-Parks, a Certified Professional Dog Trainer, on her DVD - It's PAWSible! Dog Training and Puppy Training DVD.

First, she gets the pup in a "heel" position on her left. See the picture on the right - lower bottom. That's Beth with a dog she's training.

Then, she starts walking. As soon as the pup pulls on the leash, she stops.

When she regains the pup's attention (the dog looks at her), she rewards the behavior.

When the puppy looks at her and walks alongside of her without pulling, the puppy is rewarded again.

The behavior the trainer rewards is the dog's attention to what the trainer is doing. Leash training a puppy is impossible if the pup's attention is elsewhere than on the trainer. That's why it is important to train first in an area of few or no distractions.

Leash Training A Puppy - Method II

Change Directions Every 10 (or more) Steps

Method II for leash training a puppy involves changing directions every 10 steps or so. This method is described in detail as part of a full section on leash training in Secrets to Dog Training by Kingdom of Pets.

Here again the point is to train the puppy to follow you and pay strict attention to you as the leader. If you continually change direction randomly, the dog must follow you.

You have the leash and you're in control. He has to watch you. Once more you can reward behaviors that you desire and ignore behaviors you do not want.

Leash Training A Puppy - A Plan For Combining The Methods

First Practice Method I

Here's a suggested plan for combining these methods for leash training a puppy.

Important Concepts To Remember (And Never Forget)
- Be patient. Training a puppy to almost anything will try your patience. Lose your cool and the dog will associate your angry voice with leash training. You do not want that to happen!

- Be consistent. Do the training at the same time every day, preferably before a meal.

- The first few times treat a lot. Gradually reduce the treats over time so that it's random.

- Encourage the pup A LOT in an excited tone of voice when he performs the correct behavior.

Use Method 1 First
Try this method indoors intially. Try for as few distractions as possible.

As soon as the pup pulls, stop walking. Initially, the pup will pull a lot and it will seem as though you'll never make any progress. Over the next few time, if you reward when the dog looks at you, you will see progress.

Once you can walk more than a few steps without pulling, incorporate leash training a puppy Method II and begin changing directions every 10 steps or so (mix it up so the pup doesn't anticipate a change of direction).

And now you're practicing the combo method for leash training a puppy.
