NM's Dept. of Tax & Revenue gives a brief history lesson and explanation of unclaimed money in New Mexico:

The origin of the unclaimed property law dates back as far as the colonization of America. Since that time, states have revised and refined their various unclaimed property laws, resulting in billions of dollars in collections for the benefit of owners whose whereabouts are at least temporarily unknown.

Every state has laws governing disposition of abandoned property. The purpose of the Unclaimed Property Office is to reunite lost owners with their property. Unclaimed property is considered abandoned when it remains unclaimed for the number of years prescribed by statute.

The Department also lists some of the various types of unclaimed property:

The most frequently asked question of an unclaimed property administrator is "what is unclaimed or abandoned property?". Generally, abandoned property includes dormant checking and savings accounts, uncashed money orders, cashiers checks, unclaimed insurance benefits, mineral royalty payments, safe keeping depository contents, unused gift certificates, unclaimed security deposits, cash dividends, stock, court deposits and utility deposits or refunds
