Incidental Facemask

The incidental grab and release of the helmet has been eliminated but the grabbing and twisting of the helmet will still be a 15 yard penalty.

What this means: Less penalties on the rule will be keep the game flowing smoothly.

Force Out Eliminated

A player who receives or intercepts a ball must have two feet in bounds even if the player is hit in the air.

What this means: Defenders can prevent a completion or interception near the sidelines and reduce judgment calls.

Coin Toss

Teams will now have the option to defer the opportunity to kick or receive the kickoff to the second half. Before the rule, teams had the option to either kick or receive.

What this means: This allows coaches who win the toss to choose to either kick off or defend in the first or second half.

Muffed Snap

Snaps will be in play if not touched by a player. A false start penalty used to be called before the new rule.

What this means: Allows the defensive team a chance to recover.

Reviewable Plays

Instant replay will include illegal forward handoffs, field goal and extra point attempts.

What this means: This helps correct officiating errors.

Defensive Helmet Radios

One player on defense is allowed to have a radio in their helmet, marked with a green dot, to communicate with the defensive coaches on the sidelines.

What this means: This gives defensive coaches to relay signals just as offensive coaches are able to relay signals to the quarterback.
