Hints, Tips & Techniques for the New Twins Mom

I hope you'll enjoy this "tongue in cheek" guide to the things you will and won't be wearing during your twins' first year.

While I'm the first to admit that I'm no fashionista, I do like to at least look nice with coordinated outfits, jewelry and makeup. I quickly learned once the twins arrived that this was just not going to be possible any longer. Some days I didn't even have a moment to myself to take a shower, let alone try to wash my hair or pick out a decent outfit.

Now that the twins are much older (5 to be exact), I have a little more time to get ready in the morning, but I'll tell you that their first year was nothing less than hectic.

This lens will share some hints, tips, and techniques for looking as good as you possibly can. Hey, you might even get lucky and hear the following comment like I did a lot "You look great ...considering you just had twins." Gosh, thanks.

What Not to Wear

Murphy's Law (anything that can possibly go wrong, does) holds a special place for motherhood. If you put on a brand new shirt, your babies will spit up on it within 5 minutes.

So considering this, we need to plan ahead.... never put on a new shirt. That way if baby spits up, it will be on your torn and ratty shirt and it won't matter in the least bit.

When I was breastfeeding, there were even times where I didn't put on a shirt at all. I could never master tandem feeding so do the math - 2 babies who each took 45 minutes to nurse every 2 -3 hours (they were preemies) hardly gave me a chance to pull down my shirt so why bother putting it on in the first place.

When caring for newborn twins, you'll also not want to wear white pants because it never fails that you will sit on something that will make them dirty or something will stain them while trying to juggle two babies at the same time.

Also forget about sweaters. I'll always remember Elizabeth Lyon's comment in her book Ready or Not... There We Go!: The REAL Experts' Guide to the Toddler Years with Twins where she says that you can always tell who the twins moms are when it's cold out because they are the ones wearing a tank top. It's so true... between the double hormones after delivering and caring like a crazy woman for 2 babies, you are going to be hot in the first year. Really, really hot.

And don't even consider going out with the babies in a cocktail dress unless you are a movie star and have someone to hold the babies all night for you.

Just Forget About It

Don't even consider wearing any of the below items.

An Honest Look at What You'll be Wearing

So ballgowns, evening dresses, silk, and cashmere are out of your life for now, but look at all the great clothes you'll have to look forward to... jogging suits, sweatpants, bathropes, and jeans. My rule for looking good when raising twins during the first year is "if it fits, you look fine."

How to Look the Best You Possibly Can - Beauty Edition

I love makeup, I just love it. However putting it on while trying to take care of two babies isn't possible sometimes (even taking it off isn't possible sometimes either). Also, whenever I do get the chance to put it on properly it usually has melted off my face by the time afternoon has rolled around from running around all morning.

I've come up with a few suggestions to keep your makeup looking great. Sadly, some of it isn't pretty! My favorite "trick" is to put on long wearing makeup - did you know they make mascara that lasts for 2 days!? So, I use this plus long wearing eyeshadow (with Urban Decay Eye Shadow Primer), and long wearing eye liner and I can seriously get 2 days of great looking makeup with only 1 application.

I know that the beauty experts, dermatologists, and estheticians every where would vomit if they knew I was doing this. One of the first beauty tips that they always recommend is to remove your make up every night no matter what. But, they have never tried combining looking good and raising twins before.

Beauty Products You Need

Get yourself some long wearing products and you'll get more than 1 day out of the same makeup application.

Don't Forget Your Hands

In an average day raising twins, you will wash your hands at least 30 - 40 times. Think about it... after 8 diaper changes times 2, before 8 feedings x 2, when you use the bathroom, before you cook, and when your hands get dirty from whatever else comes your way.

I never had eczema until after the twins arrived. By 3 months and my first winter with the twins, I had developed a pretty itchy case of eczema on my hands.

Here are 2 products I found to help - use them each time you wash your hands and hopefully you can prevent the effects of washing your hands so much.
