New Year’s Resolution Ideas

Getting Started

This year, instead of making a New Year's Eve Resolution that you will have forgotten about by mid- January, why not make a pact with yourself that's a little bit different?

Don't be so hard on yourself and maybe choose a goal that you haven't chose before. Even the slightest change can make all the difference.

To start, here are a few tips and ideas for making your New Year's resolution this year.

Be Positive

Don't Worry, Be Happy

Some of the most common New Year's Resolutions are to lose weight, exercise more, stop smoking, stop drinking, stop eating cookies... you get the idea.

This year, start a new trend and instead of trying to get yourself to break a habit that you hate, vow to do something positive.

Work your goal into something that will make you happy, something that you will really want to accomplish.

The Key to Setting Resolutions

Make your New Year's Resolution one that is truly realistic to obtain.

Take a Different Approach

Something New

Instead of telling yourself you are going to lose fifteen pounds by February, tell yourself you will walk the dog four times each day instead of three. That will help take some of the pressure off you to deny yourself. If you focus on the negative aspects of your life and tell yourself, "I must stop eating so I can lose those stubborn fifteen pounds," you're eventually going to cave in and stop trying altogether. Instead, take a more positive route.

Make it Easier

Help Yourself Out

Go out and buy yourself a journal you really love. Decorate it so that it looks inviting to you. Then, place it where you can see it daily. A kitchen counter or a bedside table work well. Next, write down two or three things you know you can accomplish each day towards your goal.

For instance, you might not be able to run five miles a day right now (especially since you haven't run a mile since you had to in gym class), but could you park a little further away from the office and from the mall door each day?

Can you bring your lunch instead of settling for a greasy burger with the gang at lunch time? Or grab healthy snacks from your fruit basket instead of chips? Can you try to get an extra stroll around the block in with Fido at night? Create a short and doable list that will give you a sense of accomplishment instead of creating more self-condemnation.

Make Rules

And Give Yourself a Break

This can work with any habit or behavior you are trying to change. Instead of saying, "I will stop working at night when I get home" (when you know you have projects due in the morning), can you tell yourself, "I will play with the kids and not start my work until they are in bed three nights each week." That way the kids are happy and you get your work done, and it's better than putting unrealistic demands on your shoulders.

Have Fun

Enjoy Life

One final way you can create a different sort of resolution this year is to allow yourself to have some fun and say no to some things you don't want to do. We all have to live as adults in this world and yes, there are times we have to do things we dislike, but make a promise to yourself that each week you are going to have just a little bit more fun. It could be that you take yourself shopping one Wednesday afternoon at lunchtime and buy only a gourmet chocolates to savor, or buy a fun scarf that you've been eying and actually wear it out of the house.

There are so many ways you can make positive ideas part of your new year. Instead of beating yourself up for what you haven't been able to accomplish, put a positive spin on things.
