Shopping from Street Vendors on the Streets of NYC, New York

Street Vendors are as much a part of New York City as the subway, yellow taxi cabs and the Empire State Building. I can't imagine traveling into New York without stopping at least once for food from a street vendor, whether it be a hot dog covered with sauerkraut and mustard, or a hot pretzel sprinkled with salt and a little mustard on the side for dipping.

New York vendors sell more than just food...they sell everything from food to jewelry to accessories to cloths; they sell magazines, newspapers, and the list is limited only by your imagination.

I'd like to introduce you to this New York experience by filling your mind with images of it's history, and your senses with the smell of delicious street food. I can't imagine this "institution" leaving the City, though there are times when the concept of street vending is challenged. It is because of this that organizations like the Street Vendor Project have been formed.

History of Street Vending - an Income for early Immigrants to New York

Pretzel Vendor and Emigrant in NY - click image for more info

Early photo of Pretzel Vendor and Emigrant in New YorkAs immigrants made their way into the City of New York, hoping to find a better life than they had left behind in the land of their ancestors, street vending was one way to make money. The life wasn't easy, but many worked hard at whatever professions they could find or create to survive. Many had a hard time making it in business due to language barriers, and lack of proper education, but most can cook, so providing food to people on the street became a viable way of making money. This is a very early and historic photo print of a pretzel vendor and an emigrant in New York City. Click the image for more information.

Street Vending: a Survey of Ideas

Lessons for Planners

If you are considering being a street vendor as a profession, there are ways to do it, and ways not to. There are a number of books on street vending, some quite expensive, probably textbooks. Books are a great way to learn the ins and outs of becoming a street vending entrepreneur. Click on through the link for more information, and search "Street Vending" for more titles.

Your mouth will be watering after you view this!

Find the Spots Bobby Flay Visited

I've marked 3 of them on the map

I'm hoping the map will cooperate and show you the places I've marked, if not, here are the spots, and you can search for them on this New York map:

- 51st St. and 7th Avenue - Jamaican Food
- 46th St. and 6th Avenue - Indian Food
- 47th St., and 3rd Avenue - Wafels and Dinges

Watch the video above for more information about these vendors.

There are SO many good street vendors offering street food in New York, but these are the locations of the 3 that Bobby Flay visited in the video above. They should still be there...but if not, let your nose be your guide.

Helenee says:

Well, pretzel street vendors are a standard sight in Athens, Greece (and in all greek cities and towns). Sometimes they sell donuts too, but this is a modernized twist to the practice. Roasted chestnuts in the fall are also sold on the streets, and some towns have a local specialty sold by street vendors too. You can also find magazine stands, where you can buy local and international press.

pimbels says:

Yea, I like it. You can get some really nice stuff.

GabrielaFargasch says:

When I lived in New York I always bought hot-dogs, pretzels and popcorn! It's way cheaper than in Delis and other places.....

Where I live there are no street vendors but I think I would love it.

No, I don't like shopping from street vendors, and here's why

Most people get around New York using the subway and transit system. Many who live in the City don't even own cars. If you rent a car, you will need a good map. This tool will help you rent a car, hotel, etc., and below is a good travel guide.

We don't live in the city, but in the wooded/many lakes highland region of NJ, still NY isn't more than an hour away. Near us along the highway is a spot that someone has been parked and selling for as far back as I can remember...and we've been here 27 years almost. I often wonder what it would be like to do that...lots to consider...but we can dream, right? Thanks for the visit.
