Overwhelmed? Here's Help!

Interested in learning how to make scrapbook pages with your computer? Fascinated by digital scrapbook products? Overwhelmed and confused as to where to start? Well, you've come to the right place--This lens is here to help you figure it all out!

Start with the Right Software

The first thing you will need to get started with digital scrapbooking is a great software program that will allow you to open and work with all sorts of files (.jpgs, .pngs, .tiffs). The three most commonly used programs are Photoshop CS3, Photoshop Elements and PaintShop Pro, all of which can be found below. And more and more people are recommending Acdsee as well.

Are these programs not in your budget right now? Then be sure to check out Paint.NET, a free open-source program that is pretty darn powerful.

Where do I Shop?

Now that you have the right tools to get started with digital scrapbooking, where do you go to find digital supplies? Here are two lenses I've created to help you find the best in digital scrapbooking:

How Do I Know So Much?

As you can tell, I'm a lover of digital design! It's been my dream for over a year now to start designing my own digital scrapbooking supplies. And on November 3, 2007, the very first Digital Scrapbooking Day, I opened the doors of my own little shop, Sugarplum Paperie:

Also, be sure to stop by the Sugarplum Paperie blog, where I share little bits and pieces of digi-scrap while I more about the ins and outs of Photoshop. Stop by and download a few goodies!

Learn by Watching

What's next? Well, here's a little series of videos to help you along! Learn some basic techniques, taught by ScrapGirl's Rozanne Paxman. She uses Photoshop Elements in these videos, but many of the tools and functions that she uses here are available in any good photo editing software.

I'm Done... Now What?

You've played around with your software and your new digital goodies and you've made a pretty page that you're in love with! Now what? Well, you have several options:

First, I bet you're wondering just how on earth you're going to print out a 12 x 12 digital layout at home? Well, what you are looking for is called a large format printer, like this one from Epson. It can print a document as large as 13 x 19! Now you can print your layouts at the touch of a button. Another popular option--reduce the size of your layouts to 8 x 8 and print them off at home on your own printer! Or, take a copy of your pages to a popular print shop, like Kinkos or Staples, and have them print them for you.

Also, there are many websites dedicated to offering printing services for your digital photos, like ShutterFly, SnapFish, WinkFlash or PhotoWorks, to name a few. Many of these services also offer you the option of making your own photo book as well. Turn your digital scrapbook pages into your next coffee table book with the click of a button!

I highly recommend ShutterFly myself. I made a baby book for my son with my digital goodies and I uploaded it to Shutterfly's website. When my book arrived, I just about cried! It simply looked incredible. They do a wonderful job!

I also highly recommend a new site called Print My Keepsake. Their motto is "It's not a keepsake until you print it" and I agree with them 100%. I ordered a print from this company and not only is their service easy to use and very fast, my print was beautiful and I'm so pleased with the quality! If you're looking for a service to take care of everything for you, this is the one you need.

I can't thank you enough! DH got me a digital camera for my birthday (he's had one forever and has THOUSANDS of pics saved) so that I could snap and scrap our vacations, holidays, etc. I have a LOT of paper supplies, but he wants me to go digi -- he says it's actually less expensive when you take into account the photos. I had NO IDEA where to start, until I found this lens! I'm so psyched to get started now.
