I don't know if you've reviewed all of the books on these lists yet, but I honestly suggest reading a few critical analyses on the representation of culture and the history of the Newbery medal. Your attitudes towards these books reflect an unconscious assent to the Orientalist portrayals of many of the cultures in the early Newbery medal/honor books. "Orientalism" by Edward Said and Kenneth Kid's article on the Newbery might be good reads before you continue your journey through the Newbery winners.

I remember that I had a hard time reading Johnny Tremain, which made me not like it at the time. But looking back now, I really like that book!
