I did a little searching on the internet and here is a link to a place that finds old books, etc. Many people are looking for this book and described the same book! It looks like the book we want might be "No Flying in the House" by Betty Brock. My local library has it and I'm going to go get it tomorrow!

in reply to BkwrmnrsDeb Oh my gosh! I don't know the title of this book, but I have been trying to find it for over 30 years! I loved it as a kid but cannot remember the title. I only had vague memories of it and your description is so much better than what I remembered. I hope someone can help find this book. [in reply to BkwrmnrsDeb]

I'm looking for books I ordered from Scholastic when I was in grade school back in the late 60's and early 70's. I was sure that the first book said it was a Newberry Award winner but I have not seen it listed. This book was about a young girl whose mother was a fairy. After she was orphaned she went to live with her paternal grandmother who collected music boxes. There was a small, magical dog who helped her find out about her mother. Once her problems had been solved the dog turned into a music box. There is more to the story but these are the things I remember most and I know I enjoyed the book.
The second book was called "The Shades," I think. It was about a boy who found shadow people in the back yard. It was a cute book. Nothing sinister just playful shadow family. Kind of like "The Littles." If these books sound familiar and you know the names then please let me know. Thanks.

Every book on this list is a treasure in its own right. Each is unique, lovable, different. But if you only read two of them, don't miss Johnny Tremain and The Twenty-One Balloons. They are my two favorites for quality and originality. Of course, I'm...
