Newbery Winners From The Nineteen Eighties
This was an amazing decade for Newbery Medal and Honor Books. During this period two of the winners were poetic. A non-fiction book won the medal for the first time in many years, and two others were honor books. Plus there were many excellent novels including memorable historical fiction.
My choices for best novels (of those I've read) are Hatchet and Sarah, Plain and Tall.

Sarah, Plain and Tall
Set on a rural early-America farm, a mail-order bride arrives to help two children and their father. This is one of my favorite Newbery Medal books. It is short but very, very sweet. Even though I'd already seen the made-for-tv movie, I was deeply moved by the little boy's need for a mother. This should be part of every American child's education.

Dicey's Song (The Tillerman Series #2)
This is the second book in the Tillerman Series. In the first book Dicey, the oldest of four lost siblings, guides her brothers and sister toward the safety of a relative's home after their mother fails to return to them where they're parked at a shopping center in a strange town. This second book shows how Dicey adjusts to life with her grandmother after her long perilous journey.
