Newbery Winners From The Nineteen Nineties
Writers are under a lot of pressure these days to produce high quality novels. The competition is enormous. Consequently the cream of the crop books on this list are excellent.
My favorite novels from this list are Holes and Walk Two Moons.
I'm also a big fan of two non-fiction books included on the 1990-1999 list: The Great Fire and The Wright Brothers: How They Invented the Airplane.

Holes
A boy sentenced to serve at a juvenile detention facility must dig holes in the surface of a dry lake bed daily. At first there seems to be no sane reason for the daily torture routine of digging a new hole, but as the story expands we see several layers of activity, past and present. This is one of the most exciting Newbery books I've read from an author's perspective, because it clearly shows layering in a story and how it contributes to the whole. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting a fantastic book to read.

What Jamie Saw
This is a short novel on the rather depressing topic of domestic violence and a young traumatized boy's reaction to it. Thankfully it takes place after the boy's mother has taken her children to a safe retreat, but there are flashbacks.
