Newbery Medal Winners, 1990-1999

Ranked #936 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #39,384 overall

Newbery Award Winning Books from 1990 to 1999

Newbery Medal winning books of the 1990s are more sophisticated than those of the past. Writers are under a lot of pressure these days to produce high quality novels. The competition is enormous. Consequently the cream of the crop books on this list are excellent.

My favorite novels from this list are Holes and Walk Two Moons. Both are multi-layered, complex stories complete with mystery.

I'm also a big fan of two non-fiction books included here as 1990-1999 Newbery Honor Books: The Great Fire and The Wright Brothers: How They Invented the Airplane.

Holes

Amazon Price: $9.45 (as of 02/14/2012)Buy Now

A boy sentenced to serve at a juvenile detention facility must dig holes in the surface of a dry lake bed daily. At first there seems to be no sane reason for the daily torture routine of digging a new hole, but as the story expands we see several layers of activity, past and present. This is one of the most exciting Newbery books I've read from an author's perspective, because it clearly shows layering in a story and how it contributes to the whole. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting a fantastic book to read.

A tragic situation in the poverty-stricken dust bowl of Oklahoma. However, this is a beautifully told story (in verse) and well worth the read.

Great list of Newberry Medal Winners! Nice resource for teachers and parents looking for books to suggest. I remember reading Number the Stars with my daughters. Lois Lowry was one of their favorite authors back then.
