Newbery Medal winners, 2000 to 2009
Newbery Medal books from the years 2000 through 2009 have entertained thousands of children, parents and teachers. They are full of excitement and historical significance. The stories are sophisticated and meaningful. Newbery Medal books have grown up, and are ready to greet the new millenium.
Thanks to Newbery Medal winning books (and Honor Books) children's literature has improved dramatically over the last eighty years. Authors today work hard to excel. Standards have risen, and today's novelists have learned to write outstanding novels and non-fiction for children.

2009 Newbery Medal Winner - The Graveyard Book
by Neil Gaiman
The Graveyard Book
Amazon Price: $7.84 (as of 02/14/2012)![]()
Nobody Owens was a toddler when his family was murdered, an event that takes place at the beginning of the book, which is recommended for ages ten and up. He escaped by toddling out the door while the murderer was busy... straight into the loving arms of ghosts and ghouls in the nearby graveyard. There he was raised with the help of a night visitor, Silas. This book is highly recommended, despite the focus on the macabre.

- My son recommended The Graveyard Book to me. At first glance I wasn't sure how much I'd like it, but after settling in to read I found it to be a delightful read! Not sure I would recommend it as a children's book, but for an adult who loves 'children's' literature, it was a lot of fun. Angel blessed, thank you for putting these award winners in an easy to read lens.

- I absolutely hated The Tale of Despereaux (2004). I know one of the librarians on the Newbery committee for that year and remember asking her, "What in the world were you guys thinking?" In a few of the book's passages, I felt the narrator condoned the abuse and never went back to address how bad it was. There are too many good children's books in the world to waste time reading bad ones.
