Finding Your Niche

What will be the topic of your business?

If you don't know what "Niche" means, it's basically a sub topic that has a demand for a product or service. Your niche market is your targeted potenial customers.

When searching for your Niche, you want to make sure there are people searching for that topic and that they are already spending money for products or services related to your topic.

There are several different services and resources you can use for finding your niche, it could even be a topic you really like or enjoy. Be careful though, make sure to complete the needed research before you decide to go with that topic.

When you are doing your research, keep in mind you are just looking for ideas, not a product. This will be covered later, if you start analysing these ideas before you get the chance to complete the required research. You will be causing more work for yourself as well you may end up eliminating some good niches without even knowing it.

Below you can see some resources to help you get an idea for your niche.
- Alexa Top 500
- Amazon
- Ebay Pulse
- Google Zeitgeist or Google Trends
- Lycos Top 50
- Yahoo! Buzz
- Magazines.com
(If there is a magazine related to this topic then you know there is a good market who are already spending money)

A few other places that you can get some good ideas from that are already selling information products in that market are: ClickBank.com, or PayDotCom.com

These are just a few of the possible places you can find ideas.

ACTION - For this step, spend at least 30 minutes or more, find at least 10 topics and write them down. Do this before moving on to the next step.

Research Your Chosen Topics

Will they pass the test?

First of all, I want you to understand that just because you have no clue about the topic chosen, does not mean that you can't move forward with that topic.

Many marketers have created phenomenal success from topics that they knew absolutely nothing about before hand. The best part is if you have found a topic that you would like to learn more about.

To find out if you niche topic is worth persusing, there are some things you have to find out about that topic: how many people are searching for it, is there money being made, how much competition will you have?

The first step is to do some basic keyword research. For each topic, you will be entering the keyword or phrase into a few different sources to see the results.

There are a few resources that I will be including, as there are many good tools and services both free and paid. All the ones below are free tools that will be able to give you enough information in order to move forward with that topic or drop it.

Sometimes, depending on the results you get, you can research your niche keywords with just the one tool instead of having to use all of them. Such as if you do a search and your topic fails, you don't have to continue researching that topic just move on to your next niche topic.

Approximate Limits:

Keyword Searches per day = 100
Keyword Searches per month = 3000
Competing Pages (Search Result in Google) = Less than 100,000

1) Google Adwords Keyword Tool - This tool will allow you to find keywords related to your main keyword phrase based on search volume vs. competition, you can also get an estimate of how much those keywords are worth, by simply changing what information is displayed.

2) Google Suggest - I like using this one more than the regular Google Search, as it provides you will more options related to what your searching for, while you are typing in your phrase.

Once you enter your keyword phrase and hit search, you want to look for a couple of different things: How many results show up? and How many Ads/Sponsored Links show up on the right hand side?

3) SEOBook Keyword Suggestion Tool - This is by far one of the best tools for keyword research, as it contains other sources like the adwords tool, overture, searches by google, yahoo, msn, wordtraker and much more.

4) Amazon - By searching Amazon, you can find out if people are buying stuff related to your topic. Just enter your keyword phrase and hit search. You can see many different categories such as: books, magazines, physical products, software, clothing and much more.

Important Tip: How LongTail Can Help

More targeted keywords with less competition gives you more targeted traffic

If you haven't heard of "Long Tail Keywords" before, it refers to keyword phrases usually consisting of three or more keywords. By using long tail keywords, it will be much easier to rank higher for those phrases.

These phrases are more targeted vs. one or two keywords. Because these keyword phrases are more targeted there is less traffic and less competition. But because they are so targeted, think about the results of using several long tail keyword phrases.

You will see better results from your traffic. Low traffic with high conversion rates.

Here's an example using the keyword "motor boat".
mercury boat motor parts, motor boat repair, motor boat and yachting.
