Keep fresh keep checking for new modules or HTML or just new squid ideas, this way you wont make this mistake. Thanks for a great lens. Great info and I appreciate all of the great sharing you all give!

- This is a usefull informative lens and i will say i've made plenty of the mistakes i;ve been on squidoo alittle while now and i am improving when i first started i found myself trying to duplicate other content from the web and change it around to make it my own as i found it difficult to write things into my own words but things come with practice and it doesnt get you far copying others work. I would recommend any newbie who comes across this lens to take note if you follow the advice you cant go to far off track.

- This is a fantastic lens! I'm a newbie and the advice is so helpful. Also, this is probably one of the most visually appealing lenses that I've read. The modules are succinct and they look like quick reading to the eye. The pictures are spaced well and appropriate. The lens doesn't look cluttered or like the main purpose is an advertisement. It comes across as reader-oriented and I get the impression you are very sincere about helping others. Thanks for the help!

- Thank you for an informative page dedicated to newbies like me. I do have a question. Basically a lens is a blog post, for lack of a better word, right? So, If I write about my rabbit, do I have to make a separate lens for each article I write about her? How does one update their page if the article itself doesn't change, except for the module information? I'm a bit confused, though I'm about to go check out some other lenses to see if I can better understand the process. In the meantime, any help answering my newbie questions will be MUCH appreciated :) Thank you!

- I agree with digiscrapthat! This is an excellent lens!
And I'm not even such a newbie. Just got here through a link and was glad to find it. There are some real gems here I didn't know.
Just wondering though. I've started adding pictures to all my text modules (still need to update a lot of back lenses) since I finally have started getting them from the stock photo sites. But the lens is saying to add "at least one" photo. I'm not sure I can add more than one photo through the photo adding device. So the rest of them have to be pasted in through HMTL. Is that right?
Thanks for a great article!

- Many thanks for the tips.
I have been with Squidoo for more than two years but only have 4 - 5 lens to my name.
I feel overwhelmed by the different modules. Where to add, what to add, how to make it relevant and so on and so forth that it took me a long time to complete each lens.
I guess it's practice makes perfect. I am going to give it a try again.
Thanks once again!

- Hi Victoria, I don't have any 'mistakes' to add but I just wanted to thank you for the great lens. I've had a Squidoo account for a while but I am only now just starting to really get involved in Squidoo lenses so your lens covers a lot of great information that I'm sure I will find very helpful.

- Hello Victoria! I think another common newbie mistake is not reading the Terms of Service of Squidoo in order to know what kind of content you can actually write about. For instance: In the past (if I'm not mistaken), I believe one was able to create lens about the topics of weight loss and sexuality; nowdays, this kind of content is forbidden because of spam.
Great tips!! n.n

- Thanks for this lens, I am a newbie and still learning as a go along, but I think I'm doing pretty good so far. I am not technical illiterate by any means, but I do have problems coming up with original content, and if I do, it takes hours and hours. Mostly everything I've put in my lens is my own content with links to original stories and articles.
I admit I expected to make this an overnight success, but reading about other lensmasters, they didn't make any significant income or success for months. I am not discouraged though. I will take your advice and put it to good use.

- Thank you for a very usefull lens I was fortunate to read this before publishing my first lens and applied the information that I found in it.
A point I would add is, do your research, I've seen a few lenses that make factual statements that are incorrect. It is very easy to think that you know something - I'm as guilty as anyone - only to find out that you havn't quite got it right so it pays to double check. A good starting place is Wikipedia but errors have been known there, seeking a second reference such as an authority/official website can be time well spent.

- Great lens, a great summary and must-read for newbies to Squidoo such as myself.
I totally agree with #3 but I can't find out how to add more than 1 pic in a module
Squidoo help section doesn't seem to be bringing up any answers either or at least I can't find them?!
Can anybody help?

- Hi North-Thailander. The easiest way to add more pictures to your lens is to break up the content into a number of short text modules instead of a couple of long ones.
Also I found this lens that gives HTML tips for adding extra photos -- http://www.squidoo.com/coolsquidootricks
Good luck!

- Your tip for tags is a good one. I usually use tags on posts in my blogs but never noticed that you could use tags in Squidoo. I'm off to find where to place them!
One thing about adding images/photos. While it is easy to add a photo or image to a text module (since there is a prominent "add image" area in the module), it isn't so easy for a newbie to add additional photos in the module. Unless I have missed something, the only way would be to hand-code the image source code in html. Is there an easier way?

- You have covered this topic well, an excellent resource for those new to Squidoo.
Faved and Fived! I used to sometimes leave a link to a related lens in the guestbook, but have stopped doing that and lensroll instead.
We all like guestbook comments, but I also think it is better to refrain rather than saying...'nice lens' or similar. No time nor inclination to say something specific? Then don't comment at all is my rule.

- Nice review for 'newbies'. I'm still somewhat of a 'newbie' in many areas, and have made a lot of mistakes before learning enough to begin being a good lensmaster. Helpful hints such as you present here are wonderful for those new to Squidoo, and a great review for anyone. We should all read it over at least once a year! Also, getting acquainted, and participating in, SquidU is extremely helpful, both for learning, and for feeling a part of the Squidoo community.

- Great tips on what not to do. I can definitely agree with the last point, I had someone spam one of my lenses with their links and I still have their name in my head -- and it's not associated with positivity! :D
And also, about Mistake #12: Expecting Overnight Success, I have been a squid for about 4 months but I got lucky and created 3 lenses on hot topics. I have now 500+ viewers for each per week and am getting anxious for the payout this month, I have no idea how much I am entitled to as I just deleted some of my lenses that were not performing as well.

- check out the Squidon'ts! section! there are a coupla things Squidoo doesn't allow and if they smell even a hint, they may "lock" your lens! i know i've had some trouble with that myself, particularly with the word "poker" believe it or not!
you can also have someone review your lens if you feel that it doesn't violate the rules! i've never done this and i've heard it may take a while.
another good place for advice is the SquidU forum (link at the top of the page). Everyone there is super helpful! Good luck!

- Hi Guys
I just joined and tried to set up a lens, first thing I could not get a photo of myself loaded. The system does not tell me what I am doing wrong. I presume it is the size, but it does not tell me how big or small it wants it, I then gave up on that, tried getting a page up, got to step 3 and it just would not allow me to go to step 4, again no help or indication what I did wrong, just refused to go to step 4.
Completely confused

- Put your text into a word doc then go to www.fckeditor.net/demo a free HTML editor, put the text into the editor as you see it then press "source" button then copy and paste into your text module. Bingo you have it done. Now careful sometimes the editor puts a lot of extra code in, scroll down in the source code where your text is and look at the code and where its at before and after your text. You can paste your word text into the squidoo text module directly and then add the necessary code so this way you will not go over the 10,000 character limit. You have to experiment a bit but this is something a newbie can do.
Still confused go to youtube and look up HTML and watch a video.

Now I realize why a lens remains work in progress. Each time to improved something you learn something new again and start reviewing your existing lenses.
That's part of the fun. Thanks and let's have fun together.

- Well, I've made at least 3 of the mistakes listed above. So, it was worthwhile reviewing the list. Very informative, especially for newbies like me.
Is using too many pictures a sin too? I tend to use too many pictures ... a picture is worth thousand word, you know :)
Being a new squid around here, I also wonder why Squidoo doesn't allow lensmaker control the side bar (on the left). There's also empty space on the sides (as on this lens). It's precious real estate wasted.

- I'm certainly open to all this advice, and I'm a published author. But there's one thing I have not figured out. I want to improve my lenses, but increasing the photos, tags, etc, may be useful... ande HOW does one do that? I'm dying to know HOW one goes about doing so. Granted, it may be necessary, but HOW does one get pics, and tags from a nonexistent library?
Thank you,

- Thanks for your lens, it gave me alot to think about, being new to this and really trying to learn the ropes. Hopefully with a little more practice I will get better at this and be able to publish alot more lenses that will help or humor others.

- Thank you for this lens. I created my lenses some time ago and haven't seen much action. I think the time I am spending now researching and gaining insights from people like yourself is well worth the effort. I now see the error of my ways.

- Thanks a ton. I am a "noob" and there are definately some points here that I need to go address on the lenses I have created thus far. It is interesting because I now have 7 lenses. I went back and looked at my first one this morning and it is amazing how crappy it truly is now that I have a little more experience. I am going to have to go back and update!

- How do you delete the table of contents module?
I've found a way to do this in edit mode -- [by adding a second contents module, then deleting both the first and second modules. When I then publish, the original table of contents appears as if I never edited it...
Can anyone help?
Regards, Jack

- This is good information, especially for Squidoo newbies. The "Mistake#1" is so often overlooked while developing a lens... To me, nothing is perfect unless the lens produces the required results consistently. 'Til then, it's analysis, tuning and more fine-tuning in the right direction!
