- Great tips on what not to do. I can definitely agree with the last point, I had someone spam one of my lenses with their links and I still have their name in my head -- and it's not associated with positivity! :D
And also, about Mistake #12: Expecting Overnight Success, I have been a squid for about 4 months but I got lucky and created 3 lenses on hot topics. I have now 500+ viewers for each per week and am getting anxious for the payout this month, I have no idea how much I am entitled to as I just deleted some of my lenses that were not performing as well.

- when you edit a lens and Save it its different from Publishing. They're next to each other in the box @ the top right. Saving allows you to make changes that you can go back later and continue you with. Publishing your results makes them live to the world!
hope that helps!

- check out the Squidon'ts! section! there are a coupla things Squidoo doesn't allow and if they smell even a hint, they may "lock" your lens! i know i've had some trouble with that myself, particularly with the word "poker" believe it or not!
you can also have someone review your lens if you feel that it doesn't violate the rules! i've never done this and i've heard it may take a while.
another good place for advice is the SquidU forum (link at the top of the page). Everyone there is super helpful! Good luck!

- Hi Guys
I just joined and tried to set up a lens, first thing I could not get a photo of myself loaded. The system does not tell me what I am doing wrong. I presume it is the size, but it does not tell me how big or small it wants it, I then gave up on that, tried getting a page up, got to step 3 and it just would not allow me to go to step 4, again no help or indication what I did wrong, just refused to go to step 4.
Completely confused

- Put your text into a word doc then go to www.fckeditor.net/demo a free HTML editor, put the text into the editor as you see it then press "source" button then copy and paste into your text module. Bingo you have it done. Now careful sometimes the editor puts a lot of extra code in, scroll down in the source code where your text is and look at the code and where its at before and after your text. You can paste your word text into the squidoo text module directly and then add the necessary code so this way you will not go over the 10,000 character limit. You have to experiment a bit but this is something a newbie can do.
Still confused go to youtube and look up HTML and watch a video.

Now I realize why a lens remains work in progress. Each time to improved something you learn something new again and start reviewing your existing lenses.
That's part of the fun. Thanks and let's have fun together.

- Well, I've made at least 3 of the mistakes listed above. So, it was worthwhile reviewing the list. Very informative, especially for newbies like me.
Is using too many pictures a sin too? I tend to use too many pictures ... a picture is worth thousand word, you know :)
Being a new squid around here, I also wonder why Squidoo doesn't allow lensmaker control the side bar (on the left). There's also empty space on the sides (as on this lens). It's precious real estate wasted.

My first lens inexplicably shot to a lensrank better than 5,000 within a few days but is now down to about 30,000 despite improvements. I suspect that the number of viewers is highly weighted in the rating formula.

- Thanks for the tips! Got a few questions ... how do I put a link inside one of my modules? For example, if I want to put a link in the introduction module or a text module. Also, I have seen a few lenses that have a section with contact information, like a calling card with address, email, website, etc., but can't seem to find that in the modules. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I want to improve my lenses, but increasing the photos, tags, etc, may be useful... ande HOW does one do that? I'm dying to know HOW one goes about doing so. Granted, it may be necessary, but HOW does one get pics, and tags from a nonexistent library?
Thank you,
Stephanie

I've found a way to do this in edit mode -- [by adding a second contents module, then deleting both the first and second modules. When I then publish, the original table of contents appears as if I never edited it...
Can anyone help?

- Wow, what great tips! I like the layout and after seeing your lens and matching it up against mine, I noticed something else you didn't bring up -- keep your modules short! That doesn't mean making them terrible; it just means make every word count (mine, for example, are long and a lot less appealing than this).
Thanks for your advice and helping out us newbies!

- When I read the "tags" point, I was surprised! I thought I had tags, but when you worte "START" with 15, I immediately went to each of my lenses and click, click, clicked to add a dozen or more new tags. I was surprised at how easily new tags came to me, once I had the blank windows to fill! From now on, I will make a long blank list and THEN fill it in(instead of thinking of a tag, adding it, and then thinking some more).

- Aaviel: Different strokes for different folks, I guess. :) If it's a topic I'm interested in, and the lens is well-written (not boring), I'm happy. I think a lens should be as long as it needs to be, though it's worth noting that many successful lenses tend to be the "novel-sized" ones.
Another thing about lenses is that it's easy to break up an article into clearly labeled, bite-sized segments. This practice can make a lens' article seem longer than it is, but when it's done right, it makes the lens much easier to scan.

- Thanks for the tips! I'm also a newbie, and I've been looking at the more popular lenses to see what makes a hit.
I'm a little concerned about the length of most lenses, though. I usually look for articles that are straight to the point, and more often than not what I see are what I'd call novel-ish in length. (And in case you're wondering, I think yours is on the long side, but with valid content that's relevant all throughout, so it's okay. ^_^)
Is this really the norm? I don't really want to write lengthy lenses (unless the content requires it), because normally those are the ones that I find boring.

- I think people are afraid of using too many modules- feeling like they're indulging or something. For instance, having LOTS of text modules is great if you want to break up the text that you have- I didn't realize that and that's something I'm going to do to improve my existing lenses.
Don't worry about using too many- that's why they are there!

- Thanks mate
All good common sense stuff.
With duplicate content, will google still punish you if you repost your articles from your own blog onto a squidoo page?

- Hi Victoria,
Great lens. I learned many things to work on for my first lens. I especially liked the part about not being an overnight success. When people are promoting article marketing, it's easy to get the impression that everyone will be making a ton of money right away - not always the case. 5 stars

- Hi Brenda - No, that shouldn't be a problem; borrowing small quotes like this rarely is. Legally speaking, you're in doubly safe territory since you're quoting Wikipedia and giving credit to the source. Wikipedia allows you to republish its content, provided that you don't take credit for it. Squidoo even does that with the Wikipedia module.
My personal opinion is that it would be better for you to introduce your topic with your own voice, using your own words. Wikipedia might be a well-written resource, but if I visit your lens, I'm looking for answers from you, not Wikipedia. :)

- Hi, and thank you for your lens and for some more things to think about!
Do you think it is helpful or harmful to use a quote? I often like to give a definition of a phrase. I used Wikipedia's definition of Roots Canada Ltd. as an opening paragraph in my lens http://www.squidoo.com/RootsCanada because I thought it was interesting and well written. I quote Wikipedia and use quotation marks. Do you think that my lens would be penalized for this?

Great lens.

- eShopper: I do what you're describing all the time. I research multiple sources, then write what I learned in my own words. Sometimes I'll just write a paragraph or two, then encourage people to visit a more comprehensive or "authoritative" source by including a couple of links to sites where I did most of my research.
As long as you're writing in your own words and not blatantly copying another source, you should be fine.

You should have mentioned that it looks incredibly tacky to go around promoting your lens by making useless comments on other people's lenses!
