Which Guitar is Best Electric or Acoustic?

What to buy Electric or Acoustic?
If you want to learn how to play the guitar the first daunting step is to actually go out and buy one!
But which one? well hopefully my article will shed some light on the matter and help you come to a informed decision.
Which Guitar is Best Electric or Acoustic?
Make an informed Decision
Purchasing your first guitar can be difficult, you want it to look cool but also be comfortable to play. You see the vast selection at your local music store and become even more confused on which one would be best for you! The very first decision for you to make is which type to buy Electric or Acoustic? Learning the difference between the two types will help you get past this first difficult and confusing first step!
In a nutshell the main difference between an Electric guitar and an Acoustic guitar is just a matter of amplification. An Electric guitar needs to have an amplifier, and also the electric guitar is easier on your fingers to play. Also the electric can cost more because you have to purchase an amp to go with it. Also the Electric guitars have more choice when it comes to the shape of the guitar.
So to recap you get more choice on the look of an electric guitar compared to an Acoustic, Also the Electric is easier on the hands to learn on than an acoustic, so you would come to the conclusion that the Electric guitar is the best out of the two instruments to get when your just starting out, right!, Well no, as usual things are never that black and white!
There are choices to be had with an Acoustic guitar as well, you can get classical ,flamenco, folk, and also electro acoustic, you can also get different types of strings, you can have a nylon strung acoustic or a steel strung acoustic or even a mixture of both!
The steel strung guitars are more for if you want to play rock, pop, or country music because they are louder and are really suited to a rhythm strumming style.
Nylon strung guitars are geared more towards classical and flamenco styles of music and are great for fingerpickin style.
So what guitar should you get if you are just starting out? Well I personally think you should get an acoustic and an electric but if you really only have the money for one then I would pick an Acoustic just on the basis that it is a bit harder on your fingers than an electric but the advantage to that is you will build up calluses and strengthen your fingers up so that when you do switch over to an electric it will feel really smooth and easy on the fingers than if you do it the other way round!

- I prefer acoustic, but maybe that's because that is what I have always played, and also because of the kind of music I like most.

- I would get the electro-acoustic because it gives you the best of both worlds and allows you to have a softer sound or a much firmer sound which is great if you're not sure which to have.

- I think one thing that a potential buyer should take into account is the sort of music he /she will be playing, unless the first guitar is purely to try and see if you can learn to play.
Further considerations are how high are the strings off the fingerboard and how wide is the neck. These will affect the ease of playing and speed which can be attained. But some useful tips for a beginner.

- A semi acoustic guitar is something I would surely want to have. The design is just so elegant.

- Hi
Great lens. Its good that there is somewhere for people to look for advice on buying guitars. My first guitar was an Electric and I'm glad I went with one as, as you mentioned the strings are much softer, but I think a Classical Guitar is also great for beginners as the nylon strings are really soft of the fingers.

- I started on a Squier Strat pack (I was on the Metallica phase back then), but I'm listing it for sale since I mostly play acoustic.
I personally think beginners should start on an acoustic. Great electric guitarists have years of experience with various combinations of amps, pedals, and effects to get their sounds. It's impossible for a total beginner to buy a set of guitars and amps and expect to sound like their favorite guitarists.
Besides, steel string acoustics build your finger strength and calluses better. Try playing steel string acoustic for a few months, then play an electric. You'll feel the electric much easier to play.

- Don't rule out Yamaha guitars. The best acoustic I've ever played was a Yamaha guitar.
Neat page.

- I specialize in vintage electric guitars, but its also very useful to learn about the acoustic as well. The electric guitar is more for rock n roll while the acoustic is more for country lovers, or at least thats my opinion.

- Awesome lens! I think I like electric better, but for a beginner I would suggest acoustic because it will force you to play more cleanly from the beginning. I'm giving you 5 stars. Check out my lens on guitar scales.
