My Babies slept through from 3 weeks old... Your baby can too!!

Your newborn baby can sleep through the night...

I am a Mummy of three breastfed children...
Please don't stop reading if you bottle feed!
I breastfed my babies until they were all 12 months, because I could and I do totally understand some women have difficulties.
When my approach to sleeptime worked with my first child, now 7, I knew I was doing something right, but also felt that, well, maybe I'm just lucky.
Second time around, with a totally different natured child, now 4, again my approach remained the same and the sleeping pattern didn't alter from my first.
Third time around, just 16 months ago, again, instantly a different natured child, my approach paid off.
I now have three children whom all have slept through the night from 3 weeks of age and continue to do so without waking during the night.

HOW YOU SAY?!?!

As newborns, I demand fed my babies, whenever they appeared hungry, but trying to eventually space the feeds out over at least 2 hours over the first week.

*The important part here was to always put the babies in their cradle/cot when they fall asleep and assure that they wake in the cot.

*If they happily wake, let them take in the surroundings for a little while, let them be alone and awake, it doesn't hurt them.

*Also, always ensure your baby has got sufficient wind up before sleeping.

*Don't rock your baby to sleep and limit holding your baby while they sleep. Hard I know!

*Don't tiptoe around your house, get that baby used to noise!!!

*Try Never to wake your baby for a feed!

I remember I had mastitis and needed to wake my 2 week old baby for a feed so I didn't pop, she'd been asleep for 4 hours during the day, so I just began gently talking beside the cot, not picking her up until she woke in there.
When my babies had more awake time during the day, half an hour or so after a feed, if they seemed sleepy, I would put them down in their cot for a sleep while they were awake.

* Place the baby in the cot, kisses and cuddles, say bye bye, have a nice sleep and let the baby fall asleep on his/her own.

* If the baby whinges a little I would not enter the room, as this is most likely a tired cry anyway.

*Try your best, I know it's hard not to attend to them if they cry, but if you know they are fed, changed and comfortable, you are doing all the right things.

I understand that every baby and parent is individual, all situations are different.

This is my personal approach, not professional advice :)

After week three I had noticed that my babies were sometimes waking in the night happily, then over a space of about 15 minutes were happily falling back asleep, occasionally slightly whiny, but never demanding a feed.
Judging this situation and implementing what I addressed above, I realised that if I tried to give my babies their last feed at around 10 or 11pm, with trial and error, then they would wake about 7-8 hours later.
When they reached about 2 months of age I was putting them to bed at about 9 and they woke at around 10 hours later.
By around 4 months, they were sleeping 12 hours through the night!
Never waking before 7am!

*Knowing how to read your babies tired and hungry signs is something that will highly benefit you also*

My three Children are all wonderful sleepers and love bedtime, well, until the two oldest began sharing a room recently and it's like slumber party night every night....but that is a whole new Lens topic :)

Sleeping Bags

V's Blankets

type=textSleeping bags are a must for a comfortable cozy sleeping baby!
From the time that they can wriggle or roll out of their nicely tucked in blankets, I recommend to use a sleeping bag!! GroBag are great!
My children were about 2 months old when I began using them, because they were forever kicking the blankets off or moving around the cot so much that they would surely be getting cold!
It is important to use your judgement as to how to dress the baby before using a bag.
I found in summer, I would put on a singlet and thin cotton bag.
Winter, flannelette pj's are fine with a fleece bag.
Of course all countries, climates and bags differ, so judgement is a must!
But, us Mummies, we just know these things.... oh and of course Daddies too! :)

Our babies were sleeping at night. I can't remember how we did it, it just came naturally doing some of the things you've mentioned. I admit it was so hard at first, with the first baby, but we got a routine and that worked with the other two babies after. A goodnight sleep sounds good at every age.

Very sound advice. I used to run the vacuum and carry on with my work while my daughter napped. My daughter tends to get hot, so I wanted her to be able to kick her blankets off if need be. Now she's 7 and sleeps soundly through the night. Oh but they all look so angelic asleep, don't they.
