Newcastle United - also known as The Magpies or The Toon - is a football club playing in the English Premier League. Historically Newcastle United is the 8th most successful club in English football, with 4 league titles and 6 FA Cup titles. All of these wins dates back to 1955 or before, but Newcastle United has had lot of finishes in the top 5 of the Premier League since then.
In European football Newcastle Uniteds biggest success in recent years was to win the UEFA Intertoto competition in 2006.
Newcastle United play their home games at St. James' Park, their home ground since the club was formed in 1891. With a 52,000 all-seater capacity it is the 3rd largest ground in English football - but even so - the club has submitted plans to extend the ground to a 60,000 capacity.
During May and June of 2007 Newcastle United has been bought by retail tycoon Mike Ashley, who delisted the club from the stock exchange, and is now the sole owner.
Newcastle United is currently without a manager, as Kevin Keegan chose to end his second spell as manager of the club on 04.09.08 due to lack of backing from the board of directors. His first spell ended when he went on to manage the England team, and at that time he was one of the most successful managers in the club history.
Team captain is Nijtap Geremi, who joined Newcastle United from Chelsea FC in the summer of 2007. Geremi is playing in right side midfield, and is a Cameroon international player.
Other key players in the Newcastle FC squad is: Shay Given (GK), Jose Enrique (D), Obafemi Martins (F) and Michael Owen (F)

- Hi Lee.
Thanks for your comment - I appreciate the interaction and help of fans who are more knowledgable than me. In this case my source at the time of writing was wrong, and has since been updated.
I have taken your comment into account, and made appropriate changes. I don't see the fairs cup as "European", because the contest wasn't a UEFA tournament, and wasn't played exclusively by club teams as we know them. It was an intercity cup with mixed teams.
Thanks for your input....
